For the price (less than tank of gas) Utah Byways is the best buy among Utah 4WD guides. It is a thorough and exceptionally well-illustrated glovebox-size guidebook to the state's most spectacular backcountry roads. The routes are all suitable for a stock 4WD sport-utility vehicle. The book provides a wide range of experiences, from graded roads to famous 4x4 trails like Elephant Hill. The geographic coverage is extensive as well, covering every region of the state, from the Uintas to the Wasatch Range, from the Moab area to the Great Basin and the most remote reaches of canyon country, even a bit of the Mojave Desert. The b&w photos are some of the best you'll find. Among the best features are the detailed, full-page maps that accompany each of the 65 scenic and historic routes that the author describes, and the handy 5x9-inch format. It is designed to fit into an SUV's side pocket or glovebox, making it easy to take along while still including abundant content. Also included is an extensive how-to chapter, and a listing of information sources that includes Web sites. Also adding to its appeal is the author's multi-activity approach. Mountain bikers, hikers and campers will find it quite useful, too.Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
