Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
What does the Utah State flag look like? What are the salt flats? And why is Utah called the Beehive State? With answers to almost any question that might come up on a school report, and five pages of internet links to additional resources, this is truly a report writer's dream book. Information on the state's history, land, climate and government is organized in an easy-to-use fashion. Full-color photographs and maps show well-known tourist sights and document historical information. But the most amazing aspect is the ready access to additional information on the web. Within the book, the publisher provides a password for the "Report Links" web site, and from there students can find child-friendly web sites on everything from Utah state history, to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, to Dinosaur National Monument. Many of the photos in the book are displayed as they would appear on the internet, complete with the web site information in the address window, showing where to locate the pictures on the web. Also included are bibliographical references, an index and suggested books for further reading. 2003, MyReportLinks.com Books/Enslow, Ages 8 to 12.

School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-Each book begins with an introduction that explains how to access the MyReportLinks Web page and then lists about 30 sites that can be accessed from that page. The Internet pages are created by various organizations and are generally interesting and well done. The rest of the book reads like other short books intended for reports. Some of the illustrations are screen shots of Internet pages, but the address pictured does not always call up the page shown. Each page is framed to look like a Web page, which gives it a boxy, cluttered appearance. Both books include full-color photos. The text in North Dakota sounds like a guidebook, listing attraction after attraction and adding brief related historical tidbits. Some chapter headings do not reflect the contents of the section. For instance, "Interesting Statues" includes discussion of the Garrison Dam, the capitol building, sunflowers, and a giant hamburger. Utah is better organized.-Donna Cardon, Provo City Library, UT Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
