The townspeople of Kurozu-cho are being haunted by a strange infection of spirals. When corpses are cremated, the smoke forms a black spiral in the sky, and the clouds form swirls like those in Van Gogh's The Starry Night. Soon, things intensify: a lighthouse throws out spiral beams at dusk; babies are born, only to sprout spiral-capped mushroom-shaped appendages from their stomachs; one man becomes obsessed with spirals until he goes completely mad. The spirals even begin to infect people's bodies, leaving grotesque spiral voids. Readers witness these chilling disturbances through Kirie, a wide-eyed schoolgirl with a pixie cut, whose world is drawn in typical, lighthearted teen-romance manga style. When she's at home or school, things seem normal, but the sudden contrasts between the ordinary events of everyday life and this mysterious invasion of chaotic, threatening spirals makes the horror all the more shocking. Ito knows how to make readers' hearts drop and stomachs turn, but once the scare factor wears off there's not much more to the book .Characters enter the story only to become part of the town's body count, and Kirie, a constant survivor, is no more than a vehicle for the next spooky outbreak of deadly spirals. She reacts to each ordeal with fear and manages to escape before the spirals show up yet again. She doesn't attempt to find a solution, and there's barely any character development or plot.     the curse is spreading

    my friends read this book and now they belive they are taunted by the spiral because one of my friends was making pancakes and it had the pattern of a spiral on it right after they read the book they were walking down the halls of school and there were pictures all down the hall of spirals they and i are relli relli scared now read if you have a strong stomache

    Pure Lunacy. You will not eat or sleep.

    Another classic comes forth to scare us and amaze us. Bravo for Uzumaki.

    Pretty Fantastic

    As a graphic novel and american pulp fiction enthusiast, i had no clue what i was getting into when i checked this out from a local library. After having depleted my school library's insufficient supply of comics and graphic novels, I sought more from a local library. Upon finding Volume I of Uzumaki, I was unfamiliar with the term of 'manga' and i actually still am. Junji Ito's ability to tap into phobias engraved into the human psyche (may i point to the centipede in Mrs. Saito's cochlea?)is superb. The strange and unsettling episodes dredge up unrecognized fears that would have otherwise been overlooked. A most primal and disturbing kind of fear. I think this is absolutely excellent. I need to read the other ones.

    Twisted and Scary as Hell.

    I read reviews about this book. Reviews that said this book is scary. I hoped they were right, so I checked it out at the library. I read it and I wanted to read it again. This is a scary book. This book is the combination of Akira and The Ring. I simply think that this book deserves to be one of the scariest books of all time.

    Definately a Masterpiece

    This manga is a stunning example of the japanese horror genre. It is suspenseful and gets better in the later volumes. If you don't like horror i'd stay away, but if it's your cup of tea, GET IT!!

    Better than 'The Ring'

    A masterpiece of dark humor and true horror. The live-action movie version of this series is brilliant, and the books are even better. This is a 'twisted' tale of a Japanese town taken over by an evil force in the shape of a spiral.
