Overview

This collection of Perry Como's 14 recordings made in the 1940s for distribution to the armed forces illustrates what is so valuable to collectors about V-Discs. At the start of Como's solo career, there was a recording ban for musicians in effect, though the singer occasionally circumvented it by recording a cappella with a singing group. The musicians did play on V-Discs, however, and now you can finally hear versions of both sides of Como's debut single, "Goodbye Sue"/"There'll Soon Be a Rainbow," with instrumental accompaniment. The singer also tries out other people's hits that he never released at the time -- "Love Letters" (Dick Haymes), "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time" (Les Brown & His Orchestra with Doris Day), and "Like Someone in Love" and "Now Is the Hour" (Bing Crosby). And there are several obscure songs he never committed to wax elsewhere. All of this means Como collectors will appreciate this disc, though more casual fans may not want to bother.
