Overview

Alabama, 1942. The war is everywhere, but Victor—a sixteen-year old boy sent by his father to care for his dying grandmother on a lonely island in Mobile Bay—can only dream of it. Then he wakes one amazing night to a thunderous roar from the Bay, and watches as a thug burns his boat. He also discovers a decomposing corpse, witnesses a near-seduction . . . and sees the ominous shadow of an enemy submarine surfacing at night.

Suddenly Victor is playing unforeseen roles—now hostage, now pursuer—in the perilous war at home. . . .

It is 1943 in Mobile, Alabama. While the world prepares for war, 16-year-old Victor--sent to care for his grandmother--yearns to be part of the unfolding patriotic adventure. In an unexpected turn of events, Victor's wish comes true, and he embarks on a fabulous and suspenseful series of exploits.

Editorial Reviews

Christian Science Monitor
Enthralling and delightful … rich and compelling … What might at first have seemed a gently paced coming-of-age story turns into a rambunctious tale.
Boston Globe
With a marvelous ear for language and devilishly rich imagination, Mark Childress has crafted an engaging and readable novel.
Atlanta Journal- Constitution
Childress knows the business of words. His descriptions evoke a sense of time and place that rings true.... A rare talent.”
Vogue magazine
From his lyrical opening passages, which evoke the softness of adolescent innocence, right up through his explosive finale, he never lets us come up for air. And we never want to ... . This is a yarn spun with poetry. This is storytelling at its best.
Birmingham News
Childress has as many twists and turns and surprises in his novel as the Magnolia River.

Starts strong but goes quickly down hill.

Story starts out fine and draws you into it but within one hundred pages the author decends to "Hardy Boys" writing for ten-year olds. Research regarding World War II is poorly done. Coincidence piles on coincidence with the ridiculous so quickly I find it hard to credit the editorial reviews this book received. So bad I couldn't finish it! Don't waste your time.
