Yet perhaps the most crucial loss is the throne of Amenkor?the true seat of power in every sense?now totally drained of the magic, knowledge, life force, and memories of previous rulers. The solid third Throne of Amenkor novel (after 2006's The Cracked Throne) delivers plenty of action and intrigue. Varis, the ruling Mistress of Amenkor, struggles to rebuild Amenkor's defenses and economy after a devastating attack by the seafaring Chorl. Varis was only able to save Amenkor by destroying the Skewed Throne, Amenkor's ancient seat of protective power, and now must rely on her own inner resources. Meanwhile, her mentor, Erick, tortured by the Chorl, lies near death. The arrival of a ship from the southern port city of Venitte brings the hope of alliance, especially if Varis can locate the Stone Throne, built to protect Venitte, but mysteriously lost centuries earlier. The hope that a lord in Venitte may be able to heal Erick pushes Varis to travel there, even as Chorl forces are on the move at sea and on land. Palmatier's intriguing characters and complex setting continue to entertain in this deservedly successful fantasy series. (Jan.)

Brought up from the slums to rule as Mistress of the Skewed Throne of Amenkor, Varis has seen her city through desperate times. Now Amenkor suffers from an invasion by the foreign Chorl, whose attacks damage the Skewed Throne, the source of the city's power. Varis realizes that Amenkor's only hope lies in the uncertain cooperation of her sister city Venitte, where a twin throne lies at its center. Bringing to a conclusion the events of The Skewed Throneand The Cracked Throne, Palmatier rounds out a fully-realized fantasy of panoramic battle and intense personal conflict. Strong, memorable characters and an intriguing world background make this a good addition to fantasy collections.

This trilogy is very good. The main character, Varis, is a complicated, winning, enjoyable heroine who overcomes great odds to succeed. Varis' journey from gutterscum to Mistress of a City is quite interesting to watch - her emotions connect and she is a character we can unabashedly cheer on. Worthy series

The Chorl unprovoked assault almost destroyed Amenkor. The nation¿s ruler Varis had to employ a desperate ploy to save her people. However, by destroying THE SKEWED THRONE, Varis insured Amenkor defeated the invaders.------------ However, the cost of the war has left her country in a devastating state as much of the nation lies in ruins with starvation a real probability and nothing left to defend against another Chorl invasion. Varis knows they must rebuild fast, but fears she will lead alone as her mentor and advisor Erick remains near death following a vicious torture by the Chorl. Her hope resides with finding the Stone Throne that was built to protect the southern seaport Venitte, but vanished hundreds of years ago. She heads to that city hoping to forge an alliance and find a cure for Erick while the Chorl has regrouped and are ready to renew their vigorous insidious attacks by land and sea.---------------- The Throne fantasy tales (see THE CRACKED THRONE and THE SKEWED THRONE) are some of the best the genre has to offer. THE VACANT THRONE contains an engaging plot starring a strong courageous female ruler who faces monstrous problems with no time to fix them. Readers will continue to cherish the Throne saga delivers as a desperate Varis tries to find ways to provide the basic needs to her beleaguered people.----------- Harriet Klausner
