Overview

The Vaccine Handbook has a simple purpose- to draw together authoritative information about vaccines into a simple and concise resource that can be used in the office, clinic, and hospital. Not an encyclopedia or scientific textbook, The Vaccine Handbook gives practical advice and provides enough background for the practitioner to understand the recommendations and explain them to his or her patients.

For each vaccine, the authors discuss the disease and its epidemiology, the vaccine’s efficacy and safety, and the practical questions most frequently asked about the vaccine’s use. The authors also discuss problems such as allergies, breastfeeding, dosing intervals and missed vaccines, and immunocompromised individuals.

This handbook is also available electronically for handheld computers. See Media listing for details.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Jadranka Popovic, MD (Children's Mercy Hospital)
Description: This is the first edition of this multi-authored handbook of vaccines and immunization in pediatrics and focuses on the official recommendations, safety, schedule and the efficacy of individual vaccines
Purpose: As stated by the editors, the handbook was written with the purpose of assisting practitioners in understanding the immunization recommendations and schedules. The book's objective is to be concise, practical, navigable, user-friendly and focused on the use of vaccines. This book could be used alone for a more rapid review in a busy clinical setting or as an adjunct to the one of the major textbooks on vaccines.
Audience: This book is geared toward, practicing pediatricians, family physicians, internists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians' assistants and clinic staff. Pediatric residents and medical students might also find it useful. This book provides adequate information for those needing fast access to the facts on pediatric vaccines and immunization. For more detailed review the reader should consult one of the vaccine textbooks.
Features: The book has 14 chapters that are further divided into the sections on particular vaccines. Each vaccine has subdivisions that further cover handling, storage, schedule, administration, rationale for use, precautions, efficacy, official recommendations and contraindications. This handbook has adequate number of tables accompanying the text.
Assessment: This is the first edition of this book and should be well received. The writing is outstanding, clear and to the point. The materials are presented in an easily readable and searchable format, which will be appreciated by busy practitioners or medical students and residents. The effort of the authors has provided the pediatric community with a worthwhile contribution to the field.
