Vagn Holmboe: Symphony Nos. 2; Sinfonia "In Memoriam"

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - James Leonard
Danish composer Vagn Holmboe once described his music as "a microcosm, the reflection of an order which is in itself unfathomable and impossible to form -- like the structure of atoms, or the galaxies of the universe." It is, apparently, all a matter of scale. In Denmark, Holmboe is the great symphonist of the twentieth century. In the great wide world, Holmboe is barely known because, out in the great wide world, Denmark is barely known. But in every possible way, Holmboe is as great a symphonist as the greatest of the twentieth century -- Shostakovich, Sibelius, Nielsen, Vaughan Williams, Prokofiev, Martinu -- and just because Denmark is the size of an atom, ...

But in every possible way, Holmboe is as great a symphonist as the greatest of the twentieth century -- Shostakovich, Sibelius, Nielsen, Vaughan Williams, Prokofiev, Martinu -- and just because Denmark is the size of an atom, geopolitically speaking, Holmboe's music still has in it the depth and power of the galaxies of the universe. In this 1995 recording of Holmboe's "Symphony No. 2" from 1939 and "Sinfonia in Memoriam" from 1954, Owain Arwel Hughes and the Århus Symphony Orchestra add another magnificent disc to BIS' series of recordings devoted to the symphonies of Holmboe. Written when he was 30, the "Second" was Holmboe's first great success and Hughes and the Århus perform it with incisive strength and brilliant precision. Written to commemorate the Nazi occupation of Denmark, the "Sinfonia in Memoriam" is a tightly argued and intensely expressive work and Hughes and the Århus perform it with a dedication that verges on compulsion. BIS' sound is crisp, clean, vivid, and as good as digital sound ever gets.
