Vagn Holmboe: The Complete Symphonies

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - James Leonard
This set of symphonies by Vagn Holmboe is the strongest possible argument that Holmboe is not just the greatest Danish symphonist and not only one of the greatest modernist symphonists: it is proof positive that Vagn Holmboe was the greatest modernist symphonist of all. Committed, compelling, and cogent; driven, dedicated, and deep; linear, lucid, and luminous; massive, magnificent, and monumental: Holmboe is easily in the same league as Shostakovich, Sibelius, Nielsen, Vaughan Williams, Prokofiev, and Martinu. But Holmboe, through not only the strength of his invention and the intensity of his expression but the invention of a technique of composing that redeems music ...

But Holmboe, through not only the strength of his invention and the intensity of his expression but the invention of a technique of composing that redeems music from the Scylla of serialism and the Charybdis of neo-Classicism, has created a body of symphonies able to stand with those of Beethoven or Mahler. Owain Arwel Hughes and the Århus Symphony Orchestra make it so. Hughes is a passionate advocate of the music of Holmboe and his interpretations are tightly argued, brilliantly colored, and ultimately awe-inspiring. The Århus is hardly the Berlin Philharmonic, but the depth of the enthusiasm and the excitement of its playing is far more involving than just another Brahms "First" from the Vienna Philharmonic. BIS' sound is of demonstration quality in the sense that it demonstrates why digital sound can actually rival the best stereo recordings for clarity, warmth, and immediacy. Anyone who loves great twentieth century music would love this set.
