Set in medieval England, this lively historical romance delivers the trademark wit that fans have come to know and love from the #1 New York Times-bestselling author.

When Garron of Kersey returns home from the king's service to claim his title as Baron Wareham, he's shocked to find Wareham Castle very nearly destroyed by a man called the Black Demon.

According to the last starving servants still clinging to life inside the castle walls, the Black Demon was looking for gold belonging to Garron's brother Arthur. Among his remaining servants is the enigmatic Merry, the bastard child of the castle's priest. Garron quickly realizes that she is much more than a servant: She reads and writes and makes lists, just as he does. Together they bring Wareham back to its former splendor.

But this is only the beginning. Did Arthur have a cache of gold? Who is the Black Demon? And the biggest question of all: Who is Merry?

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Garron of Kersey returned home triumphant, expecting to receive a barony for his royal service. Instead, he stands stricken at the sight of his castle in ruins. His few remaining servants tell him that a ruthless man dubbed the Black Demon ravaged the grounds in search of gold supposedly hidden by the returning warrior's brother. Brave Garron discovers, however, that he has one new, mysterious ally: A beautiful, enigmatic woman who calls herself Merry. Together, they will restore the estate and solve more than one looming mystery. A new romance by a regular on Barnes & Noble bestseller lists.

Publishers Weekly
This seventh installment in hardworking Coulter's (Knockout) Medieval "Song" series employs stock characters (including a wicked witch for a mother), loyal household retainers, a plucky, resourceful heiress named Merry, a villain called the "Black Demon," a benevolent queen, a medley of wastrels, a conveniently separated-at-birth twin, and Garron, one of King Edward's strong-willed yet honorable guards. With a talent for saucy humor and a tumultuous 13th-century backdrop, the author ably turns such formulaic material into the winsome account of Merry's escape from an arranged marriage. Beginning when Merry flees her mother and joins Garron at Wareham castle, the novel details the woman's efforts in aiding his people, the lies she spins to conceal her identity, and the consequence of revealing the truth. Most chapters conclude at the cliff's edge, and there is little doubt that Merry will eventually achieve her desires, but Coulter's irresistibly escapist storytelling more than makes up for the predictable plot and one-dimensional villains. Fans of lighter historical romances and readers intrigued by an era when honor, power, land, and notions of duty were bound by the mandates of royalty will relish this tale. (Oct. 5)

Meet the Author

Catherine Coulter
Catherine Coulter
Catherine Coulter is the author of more than sixty books, including historical and contemporary romances as well as her New York Times-bestselling FBI thriller series. She lives in northern California.

Biography

The author of dozens of bestsellers, Catherine Coulter made her Romance debut with 1978's The Autumn Countess, a fast-moving story she describes as "a Gothic masquerading as a Regency." Six more Regency romances followed in quick succession; then, in 1982, she penned her first full-length historical novel, Devil's Embrace. She counts several trilogies among her most popular historicals, notably the Bride Trilogy -- which, in turn, spawned an ongoing story sequence featuring the beloved Sherbrooke family of Regency-era England.

In 1988, Coulter tried her hand at contemporary romance with a twisty little page-turner called False Pretenses. Her fans ate it up and begged for more. Since then, she has interspersed historicals with contemporary romantic thrillers (like the novels in her bestselling FBI series) in one of the most successful change-ups in the history of romance publishing.

Readers will enjoy Catherine Coulter's exciting thirteenth century tale

In 1278, considered by many to be a witch, the widow of the Earl of Valcourt, Abbess Helen of Meizerling Abbey sells her daughter Marianna de Luce de Mornay to the highest bidder, the malevolent Jason of Brennan. Rather than marry the evil Jason, Merry sneaks out of the castle wearing a lad's garb, but is caught by the Earl of Wareham, Lord Garron. Merry manages to escape again, but follows Garron and his retinue to his keep.

At Wareham, Garron is stunned by the massacre that greets him. Few survive the horror. Merry sneaks into Garron's keep and masquerades as the dead priest's illegitimate bastard daughter. Caring for others, Merry tries to help the survivors, which brings her to the attention of Garron. He realizes she is The Valcourt Heiress and plans to escort her to the king. Instead she seduces him, which forces the honorable Garron to have to wed her. However, her odious mother kidnaps her and holds her prisoner until she is released and returned to Wareham. However, her behavior is totally the opposite of her first time here, but Garron knows something is not right as Merry is nothing remotely like the woman he fell in love with; especially when Helen arrives allegedly to negotiate.

This is an engaging medieval romantic suspense starring two fascinating lead characters and an evil Abbess who steals the show with her machinations. The story line is fast-paced from the moment Merry sneaks out of the castle and never slows down as the diabolical Helen insidiously works her schemes by taking advantage of the psyches of everyone who crosses her sphere. Although good and bad are drawn to the extremes, fans will enjoy Catherine Coulter's exciting thirteenth century thriller.

    Nonsensical...in a very bad way

I was looking for a light read, and got vacuous. The original plot was solid enough but became untethered with the addition of "magick" and other silliness. The entire second half of the book is so confusing and ridiculous that I found myself skipping chapters in the hope that Ms. Coulter would get back on track. She didn't. The result was a completely unsatisfying read.

    Don't bother

This book was not of her usual caliber. The plot dragged, there was no real chemistry, sexual or otherwise between the hero and heroine. The magic in it doesn't make sense and feels like a random plot line that was thrown in as an afterthought. The book was so boring and the characters so uninteresting that I could barely finish the book. I am sorry I spent the money on it, what a waste.

    Not her best.

The plot unfolds too quickly. The relationship between the two main characters never fully develops. The ending is rushed and totally unsatisfying.

Much better than I expected !

Well written, edge of the seat plot that moved right along. Very likable, richly developed characters. I thought the book too expensive, but downloaded it by accident. I was prepared to dislike it, but couldn't! It's on my favorites shelve.

    Classic Coulter

If you love Catherine Coulter's historical romance you will love this story. I also love how she adds in the true historical fact to her stories. You will love the characters and the rich landscape she pens in her latest historical romance.
