Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"A nice addition to the list of valentine stories, of which there are never enough." School Library Journal
Children's Literature
Mrs. Bear amasses all sorts of goodies for her hibernating spouse. While Mr. Bear snores, his furry lady makes a decorative sign, writes two special poems and sets out a feast of honey and dried bugs. And still he snoozes. Will he sleep right through Valentine's Day? Mrs. Bear fetches a can of ice water; but her husband wakens just in time to avoid a dousing—and reveals the Valentine treats he has long been hiding. Jan Brett does a masterful job of illustrating Eve Bunting's warm-hearted classic, now in paperback. Brett's black-and-white drawings are full of winter details and touched with red, as befits the holiday. 2004 (orig. 1983), Clarion, Ages 3 to 7.

PreS-Gr 2-Eve Bunting's tender Valentine tale (Clarion, 1983) is nicely presented in this well-done book/tape combination. Mrs. Bear has a surprise in store for Mr. Bear. She's gotten up during hibernation just so they can celebrate a special Valentine's Day. Her preparations show the love she has for Mr. Bear. Mr. Bear, as it turns out, has some surprises of his own. Together they share a special day before once again settling down for a long sleep. The female narrator reads the gently humorous story well, creating individual voices for both of the Bears. Light background music changes to accent story action, enhancing the words. Some minor sound effects are also included. This is a nice presentation that would make a good listening center, and not just in February.-Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
