Overview

From beguiling New York Times bestselling author Jane Feather comes this classic tale brimming with intrigue and passion.

A quirk of fate has made Sylvester Gilbraith the heir of his sworn enemy, the earl of Stoneridge. But there’s a catch: To claim his inheritance, he has to marry one of the earl’s four granddaughters. The magnetically handsome nobleman has no choice but to comply with the terms of the will, yet when he descends on Stoneridge Manor prepared to charm his way into a fortune, he finds that the lady who intrigues him most has no intention of becoming his bride. Maddeningly beautiful and utterly impossible, Theodora Belmont refuses to admit to the chemistry between them, even when she’s passionately locked in his embrace. But soon the day will come when the raven-haired vixen will give anything to be Sylvester’s bride—and risk everything to defend his honor . . . and his life.

I usually love Jane Feathers books, but this one was really tough to read. I don't like either the hero or the heroine, their really is not much to recommend either of them. In the first chapter, they meet on a river bank and get into a knock down fight. For the first half of the book, the heroine is in open combat with the hero, and then for some unknown reason, she falls in love with him? I am not into a hero who would fight with a woman, even if he thinks she is nothing more than a traveling gypsy. He traps her into a marriage so that he can get the full inheritance, but he never tells her the truth, she has to overhear a portion of it. She is somehow enlightened to the whole scheme by hearing a small portion of it, but is never really explained how she puts it all together. I don't see the romance here. He "uses" her body against her to gain both pleasure and to sway her, and all through the book, he swares he won't do that again. The Hero is autocratic and makes demands that his wife won't do this or she won't do that, and he never really changes. It is so poorly written that had I not paid for it, I would easilly put it down and never pick it up again. As I did pay for it (much to my chagrin) I feel like I have to finish it, but it is not a pleasure read. I can not recommend this book.

I love jane feathers books and this one is in my top two. Through out the story the two main characters try and pretend they are not in love but in the end they both admit it to themselves and eachother
