Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Returning home after two years in the Caribbean, fighting the Kurian overlords and their Reaper henchmen -- nightmarish alien invaders who look on humans as nothing more than expendable slaves and succulent livestock -- David Valentine is back in the Ozarks and needed more than ever.

In Valentine's Rising, the fourth installment of E. E. Knight's post-apocalyptic Vampire Earth saga (Way of the Wolf, Choice of the Cat, and Tale of the Thunderbolt), Valentine finds the Ozark Free Territory -- one of the last bastions of human resistance left in the world -- nonexistent and the once formidable Southern Command now "a madhouse of angry, well-armed drunkards." Valentine also finds a megalomaniacal human named Consul Solon who, with the help of the Kurian overlords, is trying to reconstruct a huge region of the southeastern United States into a confederation of alien-run provinces. However, Valentine has some deadly tricks up his sleeve -- some so powerful that they could, if utilized properly, turn the tide of war and help humankind take back their planet -- and he vows to do whatever it takes to stop Solon's dream of empire from becoming a reality.

Fans who enjoy post-apocalyptic thrillers like Stephen King's The Stand, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's Lucifer's Hammer, and Magic Time: Ghostlands by Marc Scott Zicree and Robert Charles Wilson will treasure this action-packed saga, which blends military science fiction à la John Ringo with blood-curdling Lovecraftian horror. Butt-kicking science fiction adventure at its very best! Paul Goat Allen

One of the Best in the Series

The very thorough detail which E E Knight has given to his Vampire Earth series is enthralling, but it's really the story here that makes it so great. Valentine is a character with an overactive conscience, but for once it doesn't seem to get in his way too much. After he returns home to find everything he's fought for has fallen apart, he knows he's going to have a difficult time picking up the pieces as it is, and he just keeps rolling along, making every obstacle an opportunity to fight for the cause that grips him.

    Another great Story

This author just seems to have a flood of awesome books and characters. It is about David Valentine, continueng a couple days after it left off. My favorite part is where he holds off a couple thousand men in an Alamo kind of situation.( And that was at the end of the book.) This series just gets better and better.

    Amazing

The Vampire Earth series is one of the few post-apocolyptic future books to surpass 2 books. Let a lone do it in stride. In Valentines Rising his raggy band of survivors have reached home to find it gone. In order to survive Valentine must take things into his own hands. Expect some great storytelling with the very realistic charactor David here. Playing the hero and villain at the same time. A great read, though you must make sure to read all of the other books first.

    Valentine's a very real character

As a reader of all 4 Vampire Earth books, let me just say first how amazed I am at the detail Knight goes into in his world. Frankly, I have no idea how he would keep track of all the details, but he does it so well. It's obvious to me he researches the geography of an area before writing about it and then weaves in his details among solid descriptions of the area. The star of the book, David Valentine, is not only a tough hero running around killing boogey men, he's also a guy who has to constantly make terribly hard decisions that a real officer in combat could possibly have to make. For example, when he has to weigh the loss of one life against many. Often times in movies or novels, the author takes the easy way out and has the hero save the day where nobody loses a life, but Knight makes it real and that's where so much of the power of the story comes from. Valentine has to face that loss of the single life to save the masses and then deal with the emotions of that decision as the story progresses. Also, having Ahn Ka, who is another race entirely, as his faithful sidekick, Knight also adds another layer of Valentine fighting to get other humans to see Ahn Ka for 'who' he is and not 'what' he is. When you top all that with some grisly battle scenes, well, it's the perfect book for guys. Each time I get Knight's new book, I spend all my free time over a couple of days reading as fast as I can. When I hear the next book is coming out, I reread the book and savor the descriptions and character development.

    more from this reviewer

    exciting military science fiction

It is the forty eighth year of the Kurlian order and the invaders are firmly entrenched in strategic forts around the globe. They send out the Reapers, who they created and designed to drink human blood and send its essence to the Kur that controls it. The human population is down to ten percent of what it was prior to the invasion. A resistance group hopes to destroy the masters using the Ozark Free Zone as their base. --- David Valentine has returned from the Caribbean with quickwood which acts on Reapers like silver does to werewolves. As he makes his way to the command, he discovers that the Ozark Free Zone is no more its soldiers fled or were captured by the Kurs. Valentine and what is left of his men as well as soldiers he recruits must get the quickwood to wherever the command is. The overlords are getting ready for a massive battle and David is in the unique position to throw there plans into chaos if he can keep his real identity secret from the quislings (human collaborators). The most important part of David¿s mission is not keeping himself alive but making sure that the first weapon that can kill a Reaper gets into the Free Territory for it is the last hope of mankind to take back their planet. --- Fans of end of the world as we know it thrillers are going to love THE VAMPIRE EARTH series and VALENTINE¿S RISING in particular. The protagonist is a true hero who doing ugly things which he hates doing even knowing it will further the goal of winning back Earth from the Kurlians. There is plenty of action in this exciting military science fiction novel and readers better understand what makes a reaper tick. E.E. Knight not only creates believable characters, he puts them in situations where they behave realistically so the reader believes their actions are natural. This is one series readers of alien invasions, vampires and an end of the world scenario must read. --- Harriet Klausner
