Huff delivers the goods. Valor's Choice does not make light of war, but at the same time it is incredibly fun to read.

    Author never fails to impress

I am a fan of Tanya Huff's Keeper's Chronicles, Smoke series, and stand alone novel Gate of Darkness, Circle of Light and was fascinated by her offshoot into military sci-fi. The characters are edgy and full of personality. Main character Staff Sergeant Torin Kerr is larger than life with tremendous honor, leadership skill, and a sense of the absurdity of politics and 'the system'. A new frontier for Tanya Huff and I have found a new series to love.

    one of her best

I really like this new venture into science ficton for Tanya Huff. Her stories are always about characters and she did not disappoint with this one. I love all her characters even because she makes the so witty and likeable. I hope she plans to continue writing another story about Staff Sargent Kerr.

    Valor's Choice - The Staff Sergeant's Triumph

As a first entry into military fantasy of the future, Valor's Choice is a rollicking tale. Written with the well-known action in the Boer war (Roark's Rift, for those who do not know military history), Tanya spins a very good tale of a similar action in the far future. For those who have experience in the military, the humor rings true, as does the action (same problem, different characters - tell a grunt things have changed!). For the former marines, airborne, or Special Operations types, be prepared to have some great laughs, as Tanya has re-created believable military chracters, with equally believable humor. For the non-military reader, the certifiable black humor of the combat soldier will, unfortunately, be lost or seen as depraved. Too bad, for they will certainly miss a common theme among all those who have been in combat or combat units. Do not expect deep psychological profiles of alien species, such as one would expect from Cherryh. But you can expect action, and the unique viewpoint of a senior non-commissioned officer serving in combat. I, for one, hope that this book turns into a series. We have enough serious works - this one is pure enjoyment!

    Pure action space opera

In the far distant future, Earth joins the Confederation with the stipulation that the inhabitants would become soldiers in their war with the Others. Since fighting is a part of the genetic make-up of earthlings, they quickly accept the terms and join the races that have access to the stars.
Four generations later, the Kras and the Taykans unite with the humans to create a powerful military machine. When the Others invade the space inhabited by the sentient reptilian race the Silsviss, the Confederation makes a move to gain their allegiance. Diplomacy with the combative Silsviss requires shows of strength and power. A missile shoots down the space ship containing the Confederation marines, headed by Staff Sergeant Torin Kerr. The marines land in an isolated reserve where aggressive adolescent natives want to kill them. Kerr feels responsible for her troops and will do what it takes to keep them safe even as she wonders who fired the missile.
Tanya Huff is renowned for her paranormal mysteries and epic fantasies. VALOR¿S CHOICE is her initial entry into science fiction. Though exciting, the human charcaters seem more symbolic than real and the other races fail the believability criteria. This leaves the well-written story line grasping for an audience beyond the shoot-em-up space opera crowd. Ms. Huff demonstrates her immense talent, but this novel is no choice for anyone except those who prefer 100 per cent pure action.
Harriet Klausner
