Editorial Reviews

Science Fiction Weekly
As a heroine, Kerr shines. She is cut from the same mold as Ellen Ripley of the Alien films...Like her heroine, Huff delivers the goods.
Julie E. Czerneda
Want mystery, courage, humor, and suspense— wrapped up in grab-you-by-the-throat excitement? Look no further! (Julie E. Czerneda, author of Reap the Wild Wind)
Publishers Weekly

In the rough-and-tumble fourth military SF adventure for Marine Gunnery Sgt. Torin Kerr (after 2007's The Heart of Valor), Kerr is more than a little surprised to wake up after a disastrous battle and find herself in what appears to be an underground prisoner-of-war facility, since the enigmatic aliens called the Others take no prisoners. At least, that's the claim made by the Confederation of nominally pacifist older races that provide advanced technology to humans in exchange for waging war against the Others. Kerr soon encounters earlier arrivals, who seem oddly lethargic and resigned to their fate. She must learn what's sapping their willpower, organize an escape and figure out what the Others and the Confederation are up to. Huff's appealing heroine is as fiercely maternal as she is fierce in battle, sometimes to a degree that verges on cliché. The denouement is not unexpected, but Huff skillfully accomplishes its exposition while still managing a few surprises. (June)

Meet the Author

Tanya Huff may have left Nova Scotia at three, and has lived most of her life since in Ontario, but she still considers herself a Maritimer. On the way to the idyllic rural existence she shares with her partner Fiona Patton, six cats, and a chihuahua, she acquired a degree in Radio and Television Arts from Ryerson Polytechnic-an education she was happy to finally use while writing her recent Smoke novels. Of her previous twenty-three books, the five-Blood Price, Blood Trail, Blood Lines, Blood Pact, Blood Debt-featuring Henry Fitzroy, bastard son of Henry VIII, romance writer, and vampire are among the most popular.

    Another page turner

This is the third "Confederation" novel I've read by Ms. Huff and it engaged me as they all have. She keeps the action moving, but there's also quite a lot of humor - love that. The characters have quirks that make me want to know even more about them. I've just bought the next in the series and am looking forward to another great read.

i'm not gonna buy this book.

there is nothing listed to show me what this book is about other than it's category: Sci-Fi, and the cover art, a woman dressed in a red uniform type getup.

i love sci-fi, and i love a good story with a sexy female protagonist. but i'm not gonna buy it without at least a preview.

it's like goin to the library and they've put a giant sticker over the back so you can't check out the overview. whoever was in charge of this book has no such excuse.

Very slow. Not much action. Not very interesting.

    Great space opera

Humans, di¿Taykan, and the Krai were invited into the Confederation by the Elder Races who turned their backs on violence long ago. When the Others went to war against the Confederation, the younger races were sent to fight the enemy. Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr has seen more violence in her years in the Corps than most people combined see in a lifetime. She and her squad are sent to the planet Estee where the Others are gathering for a large battle.------------ Upon landing on the orb, Torin is sent to the front line to pull back the troops, but an explosion knocks her out. When she awakens she is in an underground tunnel and quickly learns that corrupt ¿Colonel¿ Harnett and his goons are running things and the three younger races from different battles and places are too weake to fight him. Torin kills Harnettl and his cohorts afterward she and some soliers in good shape seek a way out of this buried bunker. However they are stunned when they find Others as prisoners as well. They struggle to find the exit, but when they finally surface on the unstable planet, they have little hope for survival.---------------- There is plenty of action especially battle scenes in this story, but the most interesting twist of VALOR¿S TRIAL is survival is the mother of agreements as the Confederacy and the Others ally to live for another fight between them. The different species seem plausible and their wary cease fire to escape the imprisonment seems believable and reasonable. Tanya Huff has written a rousing ¿Valor¿ military space opera focusing on strange bedfellows that will appeal to Honor Harrington fans.-- Harriet Klausner
