Overview

The adventures of Vampire Hunter D continue!

Vampires: murderous creatures in the shape of humans, they stalk the night feeding on the blood of innocents. Seemingly immortal, they can be destroyed only by the use of a stake through the heart, severing of their heads, or exposure to sunlight. By the year 12, 090 A.D. vampires have ruled the Earth for almost 300 years, and it is only these weaknesses that have kept these foul monsters from totally overrunning the world.

But what happens when those rules no longer apply? The village of Tsepesh sits in the eternal shadow of an abandoned castle, a onetime stronghold of the Nobility, the vampire lords who rule the devastated wasteland of the future. Ten years ago four children disappeared while playing near the castle, only to mysteriously reappear a month later. Now vampires have begun to hunt in the daylight. Are the two events connected? The villagers turn to the vampire hunter known only as D, but as he follows the children, now adults, the answers he finds may be more terrifying than anything he could ever imagine.

This book, though perhaps not quite as good as the first one, was thoroughly entertaining from beginning to end. D could not be more of a perfect anti-hero. I absolutely loved all the action and the ruins were such an amazing concept!

Kikuchi returns to the world of D in this sequel to his first work. In the village of Tepes, a deadly secret lurks. A decade earlier, four children disappeared from the village. Three returned with no memory of what happened to them. As if that isn't strange enough, a terrible rumor has begun to spread of a horrible possibilty. Nobility(vampires) that can walk in the daylight. Coming to investigate this mystery is D, the dhampir Vampire Hunter. As mysterious attacks and events occur around the village, D is drawn into a web of darkness and deceit. With the company of the young lady, Lina, D encounters a terrible and enigmatic foe who has the power to control the wind. As the body count and the questions mount up, D must journey and battle the next step in a deadly evolution. The action and storyline will not disappoint.

I found the style of this novel to be completely identical to the origional. This made for an easy transition into the story. The artwork through the pages is just a harsh and raw as the scenes they portray, and always portray the beauty of the moment. The mysteries behind D become deeper as questions I didn't know needed to be explored were answered. This is a window into the hunter's soul and a moral exploration of what is truly Noble. The plot is a series of climaxes building on the privious climaxes which will have you all the way through the last chapter.

I am a huge fan, all the way back to the original anime. I actually liked this book better than Volume I. I am a big sci-fi junkie, and also a vampire junkie. Raiser of Gales mixes the two genres together great. Good stories, and much more graphic than the first book. The translations somtimes come out feeling slightly 'cheesy', but if you keep in mind that the Japanese language sometimes cannot translate directly to english, it is a small price to pay for a great sci-fi/vampire thriller. The use of magic, and D's sidekick in this book are perfect, and I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the future and vampires.

I highly recommend this title to anybody that likes there horror mixed with a bit of action and sci fi. Vampire Hunter D would make one heck of a cool movie someday.
