Overview

A girl's dying wish sends D on an impossible quest in this riveting prose novel.

Even a reluctant hero can't refuse the last request of a beautiful woman. On her deathbed, the mortally wounded woman gives him a strange gem and asks him to deliver the priceless stone to her sister, far off in a North Sea fishing village. D's journey is made ever more perilous by a series of scoundrels and rogues hired by the girl's murderer. They'll stop at nothing to claim the jewel. Will they catch him? Hideyuki Kikuchi's crackling narrative and Yoshitaka Amano's imaginative artwork make this a must-read entry in the series.

This Vampire Hunter D book felt harder to get into. It was slower moving in a lot of areas, and there was far more character introduction and description -- obviously though, this is to set up for the much longer second volume. Still very good and very interesting, however, and well worth the slower parts. The characters are all very innovative and mysterious, and you can't help but wonder how D will manage to defeat them all, especially if they team up. A very intertaining read, and from what I've read of #8 at this point, a must read because the second volume is CRAZY!

Most people might find this book disappointing because it is the first part in a two part series... so the book just ends at a really weird moment. Besides that it is one of my favorite Vampire Hunter D books to date. It starts out with a mysterious girl in a town who is carrying something (a bead) and the story revolves around this bead and what it is. Very interesting and action filled as usual.
