Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Half vampire Darren Shan is caught between the warring worlds of the Vampires and the Vampireze -- and comes out remarkably transformed, in this sixth spellbinding volume of Cirque du Freak.

Picking up where Book 5 left off, the Vampire Prince springs into action as Darren is carried through a raging Vampire Mountain river toward uncertain consequences. Thankfully, the boy escapes and meets up with a pack of old wolf friends, and when he secretly finds himself back in Vampire Mountain on a mission to thwart Kurda's ascension to princely status, Darren becomes the catalyst in a gruesome battle between the Vampires and the Vampireze. As the fighting reaches its apex, the boy witnesses some of the bloodiest killing he's ever experienced, but when all is over, Vampire law still mandates that he face punishment for failing the Trials of Initiation. To his surprise, Darren's leadership puts him in a situation he never dreamed of.

A surprising and plot-thickening read, Shan's sixth book will keep you on pins and needles until the very end. The author taps into Darren's half-vampire/half-human emotions like never before, and he brings his character to another, amazing level that will leave you thirsting for Book 7. A heart-stopping shocker you'll definitely want to sink your teeth into. Matt Warner

Publishers Weekly
The sixth installment of the Cirque Du Freak series by Darren Shan, The Vampire Prince, finds Darren accused of being a traitor, after Kurda betrays him, and being pursued by the vampire clan. To save his skin, he must outfox a vampire prince, as his initiation on Vampire Mountain comes to a surprising close (though a teaser indicates yet another book). Vampire Mountain, book four, is also being released in September as a paperback. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
From The Critics
An enthusiastic blurb from J.K. Rowling should give this book, the sixth in Darren Shan's "Saga of Darren Shan" series, a big boost at the bookstores. Frankly, it needs all the help it can get. The half-vampire, Darren Shan, finds himself in another fight for his life, this time against the vampeneze, purple-skinned vampires who kill their victims. Betrayed to the vampaneze by his friend, Kurda, Darren spends the opening chapters recovering from injuries with the help of some friendly wolves. Returning to Vampire Mountain, Darren warns the "good" vampires of the evil plans of the vampeneze. A bloody battle ensues, and Darren feels an attack of conscience when he kills a couple of vampaneze. These are the best moments of this series gone stale-the moments where Darren recollects his humanness, and the crises of conscience unique to human beings. Shan has rewritten the book on the vampire genre. Very few of the horror cliches hold water in this series. No silver bullets, no garlic protection, very little sucking of blood. The original premise of a conflicted young man-who shares a name with the author-yearning for his human family and his lost way of life, has been overlooked along the way. Let's hope Shan gets back on track with book seven. 2002, Little, Brown, Ages 10 to 14.

Meet the Author

Darren Shan
Darren Shan
"I was born in London in 1972 and moved to Ireland when I was 6 years old, where I've lived ever since. I always wanted to be a writer - I've loved telling stories since I was a child. I started out writing books for adults, and managed to get a couple published. One day, on a whim, I decided to try a book for children. The result was Cirque Du Freak. Much to my surprise, it took off, and I became a de facto children's author! Since then I've used my ill-gotten gains to buy lots of comic-strip art and travel the world. When I'm not working or traveling, I like watching movies.

    Q

This is LonerClan territory, as is the rest of this series. Hopefully, though, you found this place based on the clue. Here is another: find a book of a special science, telling the story of a boy with prosthetic limbs and a walking suit of armor, the science of equivalent exchange and transmutation. The title has four words.

    The Vampie Prince

The Vampire Prince in the Cirque Du Freak series by Darren Shan starts with Darren¿s 'the books character' climb to Vampire Mountain. Darren is betrayed and nearly drowns in an under ground river. He survives with the wolves for some time until he returns to Vampire Mountain to expose a plot that he overheard when eavesdropping on some travelers. The plot is exposed and the fate of all vampires lies in Darren¿s hands. I would give this book a four out of five. It was a good story with some nice action, but it ended a little sooner than I would have liked. If the book teaches us anything, and I mean anything, it¿s that if some live must be put into harms way to save many others, it is the far superior choice to the absolute safety of a few when many others must perish. I would recommend that anyone with an eye for fantasy or adventure but not to anyone squeamish, for there are some intense and even blood soaked scenes throughout the book.

    The Vampire Prince

The book The Vampire Prince is about a boy named Darren Shan that became a vampire to save his friend Steve. Now he has been through journeys with a vampire named Mr. Creepsly (the one that bloodied him) to Vampire Mountain to be approved by the princes. He failed his trials and then got lost trying to flee to reveal many things and can¿t go back or they will kill him. This book reminds me of Blood and Chocolate, because of its misleading and all the numerous rules to go by just to stay alive. This book can and might be one of the best books I¿ll read this year.

    the Sixth

Reading this book was like placing yourself in a real battle, where blood stains the walls and screaming often occurs. Darren Shan has put so much great detail into the book I cannot get enough. This was a great read and I would reccomend it to anyone who has read the last five.

A Vicious Vampire Book Full of Vigorous Details

This is the sixth book in the Cirque Du Freak series. It is about a half-vampire named Darren Shan seeking revenge against Kurda. Kurda killed Darren¿s friend Gavener Purl at the end of the fifth book. Kurda is also going to become a vampire prince. Darren must stop him from this too, because Kurda is a vampire that is connected with the vampeneze. If he is able to become prince he will be able to get to the ultimate weapon that can destroy the entire vampire clan. Will Darren be able to stop Kurda from becoming a vampire prince and destroying the entire vampire clan? I really liked the beginning of the book, because instead of being boring like most books it is action packed. I didn¿t really like the middle of the book because it started getting slow and not much was happening. I have never seen any movies quite like this book. I think that this book would be hard to understand without reading the first five books in the series.
