Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Stephanie R. Pearmain
In Van Diepen's book, her protagonist Amy's literary crush is Alexander Banks, the handsome vampire hunting his arch enemy, the vampire Vigo, in the book trilogy by Elizabeth Howard. Amy and her friends line up with the rest of the teen diehard fans when the second book hits the shelves—a scene clearly meant to rival the Twilight book lines. They read the book immediately and then feel tortured by the amount of time they will have to wait for the third book. This "Otherworld" series takes place in their very own town, Chicago, during a time when vampires rule the city—which has curfews and laws set up to protect citizens from the dangerous predators. While Otherworld readers' favorite characters vary, a majority of teens are taken with James, Alexander's charismatic cousin who happens to be in love with Vigo's vampire cousin, Hannah. Alexander is more serious, putting all his energy into killing Vigo to avenge his family's death. A night or two after finishing the book, worlds collide as Amy is attacked in the park by Vigo—but luckily rescued by Alexander. With the help of a librarian, Amy uncovers the way these characters entered her world. Along the way she gets to help Alexander hunt Vigo in a modern day Chicago—and of course, she falls in love. There is mystery, action, adventure, and a little romance in this book. It has a "Hollywood" ending which will leave most readers satisfied and happy. The concept is great and easily appreciated by anyone who has ever wished to meet a character in a book. A wonderful read. Reviewer: Stephanie R. Pearmain
School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Amy, 17, is a huge fan of the popular "Otherworld" novels. She adores Alex, the handsome vampire-slayer protagonist. Without knowing how, Alex chases Vigo, an evil vampire, through a temporary portal and ends up in Amy's real world of modern-day Chicago. The development of the story relies heavily on convenience and the unbelievable, predictable traits of a one-dimensional cast. Amy's clueless mom allows Alex, a moody boy she's never met, to stay at their apartment for a few days, thus providing a snug environment for the teens to bond. Also, Amy is good friends with the super-hip school librarian, who used to study a little-known branch of science called "literary physics." She still has connections at the university, where she can borrow special equipment for locating portals between dimensions, thus providing Alex a way to get back to Otherworld. Chrissy, Amy's unrelentingly bratty, rebellious eighth-grade sister, agrees to meet in person a guy she met on Facebook. He turns out to be Vigo (he caught on to 21st-century technology quickly). He kidnaps Chrissy, thus sparking a final showdown between him and Alex. When Vigo makes a ransom call to Amy, she recognizes a "ping" sound in the background as one that is played at the end of the announcements at a particular store at a particular mall; thus she and Alex are able to track Vigo there. The police ready themselves for the vampire onslaught by "having wooden stakes made" as if wooden stakes are hard to come by and must be special-ordered. Suspension of disbelief is unsustainable.—Jennifer Prince, Buncombe County Public Library, NC

This book is definitely now one of my favorites!

I knew I'd be in for a fun ride with this book, I was, but I was also pleasantly surprised by the story line and the characters. It's such a creative book and definitely one that will please any book lover. The first chapter alone made my inner book-geek self squeal. It opens up to a book's release date, I'd imagine all of us have experienced that joy of getting that new book in a favorite series that we've been lusting over for a whole year.

Amy was your typical book boy-obsessed teen. She was more like an average fan who was in love with one of the characters than her more fanatical friends. Alexander was charming, yet awkward at times. His world is much different than our modern day world, it's more of an old-world charm. Chivalry is definitely not dead there, but he's not perfect, his temper gets the best of him at times. Vigo is your typical vampire who is bent on destruction, he makes an entertaining villain.

I loved the love story element. I found myself texting a few sentences to my friend that made me go "awwww".

I was sent a review copy from Scholastic.

I will be the first to admit that it would be so freaking cool t

I will be the first to admit that it would be so freaking cool to see characters that I believe are just fiction come to life. I mean really, think about. Your reading a book about a hot vampire hunter, you know the way he looks, the way he talks and BAM! He's right there! Right in front of you! And now you are caught in the midst of battle that has been raging on for years. Raise your hand up if you ever day dream this? ME!!!! *raises hand high*

So when this girl Amy is reading her favorite fictional book and her character comes to life I am hooked. I loved the idea of the plot because I have thought about it plenty of times. I loved Amy's reaction to it. She didn't believe it, thought the guy is role playing! LOL! Amy quickly catches on that he is not playing and is who he claims to be. I loved that Amy uses her knowledge of the books as well as the author to help their enemies.

The love interest in the book is what I expected. It's fluffy, romantic, and even a times funny. The light-heartedness of their love brings in some peace with all the fighting with vampires. I adored their little smiles as well as their confession of love for each other. Totally sweet!

The Vampire Stalker is not what you expect. The hopeful beginning of a fantasy come true engages the reader till the end of the book. Brilliant and entertaining, The Vampire Stalker is sweet!

Great read for everyone. Fell in love with this book from the first page onward. Very funny and cute with a little romance. If you like vampires, this is a book you will never be able to put down until you've finished it, cover to cover. Characters are believable, too.

    Pretty Good, But Short

I thought the beginning of this book was really awesome, great characters-good story line, but by the end I was really dissapointed. About half way through the book everything started to feel very rushed, and slightly cheesy. I just found it ridiculus that the cops would be taking advice from a teenager, even if she is a "vampire expert"! I feel like the author should have taken more time to develop the second half of the book.

    Very well-written

I was very impressed with the author's well-delivered story. Considering it was only 168 pages, it was well-paced, and told an entire story that was amazing from the rising action, to the resolution. I was very pleased and enjoyed this story, and would like to read more books by this author. All i can say is, even if you are not really into books about the supernatural, i think you should give this book a chance. I am only 13 years old and I have read a LOT of amazing books. And as a teen myself, this book is perfect for teens as well as adults. It has no cussing for those of you who are parents and are a little cautious for their child who wants to read it. It has the perfect amount of romance. And the perfect amount of action. But just a precaution also to parents, there is a little bit of mild violence but nothing too extreme. Overall, I am adding this book to my list of great reads. -READ ON! <3
