This is one of those books I don't even really remember getting.

This is one of those books I don't even really remember getting. Can't remember if I was asked to review it, or if I just picked it up for free one day, but it's been sitting on my ereader for quite a while now.
Anyway, last night, I had just finished reading a full length book and wanted something light and easy to read before starting another full length novel. When I saw this was only 12 pages, I decided to give it a go.
Strangely enough, I'm kind of glad I did. I say strange because the cover art does absolutely nothing to draw the reader in, and is usually one of those books I've give a wide berth if I was looking for something reputable to read.
Yet, amateur cover aside, this was actually a fun read that had me laughing out loud a number of times and getting strange looks from my husband as a result.

The on thing this book does not try to be is serious. It is a light-hearted satire that pokes fun at the obsession society has with both celebrities and vampires.
When Gabby named her tanning salon in Hollywood Vampire Tanning, people weren't too sure whether to take her seriously or not.
Yet the desired clientele soon began flocking through her doors, which gave Gabby the perfect opportunity to dabble in her favorite activity - vampire hunting.
I loved the line - "Vampires were known for their handsome looks and their ability to seduce young women, but they didn't fare too well on IQ tests. That's why, despite their advanced ages, they liked to hang out in high schools with vapid teenage girls. Made them feel smart."
Don't want to tell too much, because the book is only 12 pages long, but needless to say Gabby soon disposes of the wrong vampire and has his cousin come looking for him - a cousin not quite so easily fooled.
This is where the story makes a quick u-turn from vampire satire into paranormal porn - a move I'm not completely sure I enjoyed. There was lots of screwing as Gabby tried to use sex to lure the vampire to his demise, but I actually found myself disappointed with the sex, and longed for the sassy, smart-mouthed Gabby back.
All in all, an easy read that doesn't require much brain power to read but is sure to provide some entertainment, even if only for the ten minutes it took to read. Wouldn't actually mind seeing Gabby's story explored more in a full-length novel.

At only 99c it's not a bad buy.

    more from this reviewer

    surprising

I found this freebie browsing my Nook and I thought I'd give it a shot. I thought it would be rather trashy when I read the warnings, but wow! what a pleasant surprise! It was pretty funny and original. It's a short story actually. And a good one! I like the author's writing style. Gabriella is a hoot!
