Overview

A legendary Skinner has passed. Among the articles he left behind are runes, potions, and powerful weapons to aid in the ongoing war against the unspeakable creatures that prowl the shadows outside normal human consciousness. But there is something else: the remains of a terrifying beast no other Skinner has ever encountered. And it isn't dead.

Skinners, partners, lovers, Cole Warnecki and Paige Strobel are well armed with the tools the late Jonah Lancroft provided. But even his best weapons may not be enough to defeat the monstrosity they now face. A new terror has risen up to infect them both with its virulent malevolence, even as Paige confronts the secrets of her astonishing past. The purest evil walks the world again—the First Deceiver, humankind's darkest nightmare, the self-proclaimed King of the Full Bloods.

Although there were parts of this book that I absolutely loved, there were parts that I really could have done without. I'm of the same opinion as Cole. Why on earth do I need to know all of that garbage when a simple mention of a personal and nasty history would have sufficed. And honestly, it's those parts of the book that prevent me from giving this one five stars. Throughout this series I have seen Paige as being dangerously impulsive and unthinking, but this installment has also made it clear that she is also selfish and cruel.

YES!! He certainly did...this book blew my mind across the whole room! As each book progresses I find myself wanting more, more, more and more. Time and time again Marcus delivers just that. Nail biting suspense, great back story on Paige, mysterious movements with the shapeshifters, hair-raising action, and toss in a bit of romance...what more could a reader ask for? I'll be perfectly honest...this is one of the only series that has me at the book store the day the next book comes out! I'm an avid reader and this series is one that I would recommend to anyone who likes intense fight scenes, terrific dialogue, oh and a fan of vammpires, werewolves, shapeshifters and weapons that change to whatever the Skinners think of! It doesn't get much better than this series and from what I can tell..."The Breaking" is going to be another terrific book. Marcus keeps getting better and better with each book!! Way to go!

I bought this book and couldn't put it down. To the point I spent several nights awake and reading till 3am. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to enjoy the world of vampires, werewolves, and the heroes who hunt them.

I unequivocally believe that the Skinners series is the best monster-hunter saga being written today. The action is plentiful, exciting and often gory. The monsters are wildly imaginative and calculating. The mythos is original and intriguing. And, the narrative is riveting. The primary male protagonist, a Skinner named Cole, is funny, smart, understated and sympathetic. Further, his female partner Paige is surprising and extremely entertaining. This fourth installment expands the scope of the conflict with the monsters. The Nymar (vampires) obtain the means to improve their resistance to the Skinners' weapons, and they launch a plan to ultimately destroy all Skinners not allied to their cause. Numerous encounters with resistant Nymar result providing stellar, (often bloody), action. It's a jam-packed, sometimes chaotic, story that unfolds with Cole, Paige and other Skinners facing a full-scale 'Vampire Uprising'. Meanwhile the virtually unstoppable Full-Blood werewolves join forces with the first known shapeshifter, a being legend to be the creator of their kind. That unholy union produces an improvement in the size and strength of the dim-witted, horribly twisted Half-Bloods. Even strange mongrel shapeshifters begin to welcome the Full-Blood's bite to increase their power. The potential threat is staggering and will have to be eradicated by the Skinners.
