Overview

Explore (if you dare) the true history of the Fallen Ones — and follow the fate of a 1920s investigator lured by a beauty with violet eyes.

Long before the term vampire was born, long before Bram Stoker fictionalized this being’s ways, blood-drinking demons were banished to Earth by Michael’s host of Angels, or so the Bible describes. Now this rich, mesmerizing resource, written in 1900, sheds light on what happened hence to the three vampire bloodlines — especially the tortured souls known as the Belial. Interspersed are booklets, flaps, and letters between a young paranormal researcher who discovered the book in the 1920s and an oddly alluring woman who seeks his help. Among the phenomena explored are:

* vampires’ genealogical origins, attributes, and range
* myths about the making of vampires
* secrets of vampires’ powers and shape-shifting skills
* tips for spotting vampires, protecting oneself, and fighting back
* case studies of famous vampires — and vampire hunters — through history
* a shocking overview of vampires "living" among us

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Set in the 1920s, the latest addition to the bestselling Ologies series follows Joshua Kraik, a private detective whose murdered colleague has entrusted him with the book he's written about vampires. Readers can read alongside Kraik, as the copiously illustrated book explores vampires' ancestors (three fallen angels), the global spread of “the curse,” vampires' powers, and ways to protect against them (with the series' trademark letters, flaps, and other ephemera integrated throughout). Readers for whom vampires are still a source of fascination and fear should be drawn into Kraik's suspenseful detective-meets-Dracula story, right up to its chilling conclusion. Ages 10–up. (May)
Children's Literature
"The True History of the Fallen Ones" appears in silver ink on the cover, which has been designed to simulate leather binding, while a painting of a man with his hands around a woman's face entices the reader to open the volume. This book is one of a series of books assembled by Templar. The list includes such topics as: dragons, wizards, spies, myths, and pirates, and they all follow the same style of presentation. Each contains about thirty pages of scrapbook-type material printed on the pages and enhanced with fabricated notes, photographs, newspaper clippings and other similar material, which may be glued onto the pages. There are two letters pasted on the first two pages written by a man named Brooks and to get a sense of what this book is about; it will be best if they are the first things read. They introduce an imaginary man named Brooks, living about one hundred years ago, who is starting out on a search of discovery about the unliving, otherwise known as vampires. Chapters, each of which is a double-page spread, are titled: An Important Warning, The Spread of the Curse, Identify or Chose to Die, The Power of Shape-Shifting, How to Destroy a Vampire and They Live Amongst Us. Each is enhanced with photographs, copies of paintings, maps and timelines as well as many more notes from the man called Brooks. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
School Library Journal
Gr 6 Up—This oversize visual guide is ostensibly written by Archibald Brooks, a vampire slayer. It provides a wealth of information, such as the origins of vampires, their powers, shape-shifting abilities, myths, tips for spotting and protecting oneself from them. When Brooks is murdered in 1920, the guide is passed to his successor, Joshua Kraik, a private detective. Like other titles in the series, Vampireology presents its textual material with beautiful illustrations and an appealing layout. Booklets, flaps, foldouts, personal notes, letters, drawings, and other items complement the narrative and give it the feel of a journal. Vampire fans will find this volume irresistible.—Donna Rosenblum, Floral Park Memorial High School, NY
