Children's LiteratureThe "A to Z Mysteries" series has now made it to the letter V as a mysterious man dressed all in black visits Green Lawn. Because of the man's unusual looks and clothing young friends Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose decide the man must be a vampire. They follow the man throughout the town noticing that everyone he comes in contact with ends up with a small round Band-Aid on the neck. The plot thickens when the mystery man signs into the hotel as Dr. A. Cula. Roy uses a simple but engaging plot, lots of dialogue, and a short sentence structure appropriate to the early chapter book reader who will enjoy this book. The black and white line drawings sprinkled throughout the book help define setting and characterization. As the story ends, the kids learn it was all a practical joke. They also learn a lesson about judging people by their appearances. In case this lesson isn't clear enough, though, the author includes a letter at the back of the book that highlights this theme. 2004, Stepping Stone/Random House, Ages 8 to 12.
