This four-CD set isn't quite as comprehensive as it might have been. All of the major bases are covered, from Paul Robeson, the Weavers, and Count Basie to Alison Brown and John McEuen, and even Circus Maximus "Oops -- I Can Dance" is here, with cuts by the Frost "Sweet Lady Love" and the Third Power "Gettin' Together". But there's no Sandy Bull, and there are other holes -- where is Bruce Langhorne? On the other hand, the label has included tracks off of its recent Newport Folk Festival archival releases, and six previously unissued cuts by Leon Bibb, Buffy Sainte-Marie, the Greenbriar Boys, and the Siegel-Schwall Band. The booklet gives a good overview of the company's history, with detailed histories of each ...

Barnes & Noble - Kerry Dexter
A fitting tribute to a vital American recording label, the four-disc, 80-plus-track COLLECTOR'S EDITION documents the groundbreaking work of Vanguard records. Founded by brothers Maynard and Seymour Solomon, who had become interested in folk music, Vanguard released records by many folk legends the Weavers, Phil Ochs, Doc Watson but also branched out into jazz Count Basie, blues Buddy Guy and even rock and disco Alisha!. But from the opening notes of Paul Robeson's haunting version of "Shenandoah" to the closing cut by blue-eyed soul singers Driving Blind, you can hear what brought artists of all genres to Vanguard: deep attention to the sound of the recording and respect for the artist's individuality. The four discs are arranged chronologically and the music divided equally among them. Disc one moves from the composed and operatic folk music style of Robeson through the collegiate folk of the Kingston trio and to the beginnings of folk rock with Ian & Sylvia, and concludes with the radio hit "Walk Right In" by the Rooftop Singers. Disc two mines the recordings of the Newport Folk Festival with appearances by Judy Collins, Tom Paxton, and Joan Baez, and sets the stage for a move to blues with the delta styles of John Hammond and Skip James. The third disc takes the blues to Chicago with Otis Spann and Buddy Guy and gets deeper into rock with Country Joe and the Fish. Disc four wraps up excursions into jazz and disco, and then brings the label back to its roots, so to speak, with a '90s crop of folk-based musicians including Peter Case, Livingston Taylor, and John McEuen.
