Overview

When you consider that Finley Quaye's first album bore the word "maverick" and his second is called Vanguard, you get a sense of his genre-defying attitude and style, but not of the accessibility of his music. The London-reared singer's 1997 debut album, Maverick a Strike, was a deft fusion of reggae, rock, and trip-hop, and it turned him into quite a big star in Europe (he won the prestigious Brit Award for Best Male Singer in '98). Vanguard finds him fusing the styles even more fluidly. Quaye's strikingly beautiful voice is so steeped in reggae that even as he explores many other genres, his songs retain a palpable reggae feel. The vibe runs through "Spiritualized," a driving rock number bolstered by horns and a throbbing bass line; "The Emperor," a string-driven ballad; "Hey Now," a melancholy track driven by exotic percussion and a droning keyboard; and "Chad Valley" and "British Air Rage," which delve into more experimental, trip-hop-ish territory. It also permeates the handful of more traditionally reggae-based songs. Quaye comes from a deeply musical family -- he's the son of jazz composer Cab Quaye, his brother Caleb played guitar with Elton John and Hall & Oates, and trip-hop icon Tricky is his nephew -- and all of those styles, and more, come into play in his music.
