Children's Literature - Peg Glisson
Seventh-grader Maggie Brooklyn Sinclair returns in this sequel to Girl's Best Friend. Her parents are allowing her to maintain her dog walking business as long as she keeps up her grades. While working one afternoon after school, she learns dogs are being egged in the nearby park. That's not the only excitement in her Park Slope neighborhood, though: tween star Seth Ryan is filming there! Maggie signs up as an extra, along with friend Lucy and twin brother Finn, but she is tossed from the set—which catches the attention of Seth, who tracks her down at the local pizza hangout. Now Maggie finds herself dealing with rumors of their supposed romance, along with trying to catch the egger, cope with her BFF's crush on her brother, and understand her own relationship with friend (or is it boyfriend?) Milo. Then Seth is apparently kidnapped. Maggie is not so sure that is what happened, however, and manages to piece together clues in both mysteries and solve them simultaneously. Clues are sprinkled throughout and astute readers will solve the mysteries along with Maggie. Fans of the first book will be happy to have Maggie back. She is smart, a little sneaky, resourceful, and every inch a tween. Margolis' writing strength is her ability to portray the tween world and its inhabitants. Her characters are good-hearted, but not perfect, kids trying to navigate their world and move toward independence. Mystery fans will enjoy this light whodunit, as will girls looking for books dealing with friendships and first crushes. Reviewer: Peg Glisson

Gr 4–6— Amateur detective and professional dog-walker Maggie Brooklyn Sinclair falls right into her next case as dogs in her neighborhood are mysteriously being egged while walking in the park. Meanwhile, a movie starring tween heartthrob Seth Ryan begins filming in her neighborhood and the seventh grader and her friends plan to be extras in it. While Maggie gets kicked off the set after just one day, she does manage to catch the star's attention. She is overwhelmed as she begins noticing that her friend Lucy is suddenly spending a lot of time with her twin brother, Finn. At the same time, Maggie is dealing with her own romantic interest in her friend Milo. Before she can straighten out who is interested in whom, Seth disappears. The police think he has been kidnapped. Can Maggie crack the case of the dog-egger and find Seth Ryan as well? With likable characters and a fast-moving plot, this sequel to Girl's Best Friend (Bloomsbury, 2010) is sure to be a hit. Perfect for fans who are aging out of Judy Moody or Allie Finkle and mystery fans who enjoy Sammy Keyes.—Sarah Polace, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma, OH

    AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING

This book is totally great!!!!!!! Especially if you like books with a bit of suspense, confusion between crushes, jealousy, plus a mysterious kidnapping of the movie star!!!!!!
SPOILER ALERT! IF YOU DO NOT WANT THE BOOK TO BE RUINED, DO NOT READ THIS PART OF MY REVIEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay i cant help it so im going to reaveal who the kidnapper is... nope! JK!!!!!!!! I would never spoil it for you!!!!! Buy the book!!!! BUY THE BOOK!!!!!!!!!! Oh and p.s. i rated it four stars because it is a little slow at some parts, but it is really good besides that. Way to go Margolis, you've done it again!!!!! The story is about a girl named Maggie who is tied between solving the kidnapping of a movie star and dealing with her crush and an extra startle that... Okay this one really is a spoiler alert. If you dont want to know than dont read this part. The extra "surprise" is that her brother is dating her best friend!!!!!! This really is an amazing story, and there is only only one book that Margolis has written that i have not read. I recommend all of her books. Why are you still reading this? You should be buying the book!!!!!!!

    PUFFIN SAFETY

On land, puffins must stay alert for predatory birds, especially Great Black-backed Gulls and Peregrine Falcons. The most dangerous predators of all are members of the weasel family such as mink and otters that can get into puffins' burrows.

Puffins probably started nesting underground to avoid being eaten by gulls.

Puffins at sea can also be attacked by predatory birds and large predatory fish such as goosefish, especially when they are diving for their own food.

Puffins require abundant supplies of small fish and shrimp to live at sea. They are also vulnerable to overfishing, entanglement and drowning in fishing nets, as well as poisons such as DDT, and oil spills.

Lawn fertilizers and pesticides can move from backyards into ground water and storm drains that end up in oceans, where they are consumed by small fish and eventually puffins.

EVERYONE CAN HELP TO KEEP DANGERS AWAY FROM PUFFINS AND OTHER OCEAN ANIMALS. HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP!

•Avoid helium-filled party balloons as these often break loose and float to sea where they may be eaten by ocean animals or break up into tiny bits that are eaten by animals and thus enter the food chain.

•Look out for loose plastic bags! Capture and recycle them so that they don't get into the ocean.

    •Always reduce and re-use plastics.

    •Use earth-friendly lawn fertilizers.
