Meet the Author

Keith Gessen is a founding editor of n+1, a magazine of literature, politics, and culture. He is the author of one book of fiction, All the Sad Young Literary Men, as well as the translator of Svetlana Alexievich's Voices from Chernobyl and (with Anna Summers) Ludmilla Petrushevskaya's There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbor's Baby: Scary Fairy Tales. He has written about books and culture for The New Yorker and The London Review of Books, and introduced George Orwell's All Art is Propaganda and Mikhail Bulgakov's Black Snow. He is the editor of two books: What We Should Have Known (2007) and Diary of a Very Bad Year: Confessions of an Anonymous Hedge Fund Manager (2010). He is currently at work on a book of translations of the Russian poet and essayist Kirill Medvedev (forthcoming from n+1 and Ugly Duckling Presse in 2012).

    Good piece of writing.

    There is a great deal of talent here! Keith--don't forget that you were meant to write fiction, though. If I could read Dostoyevsky in the original...Wow! Toiling and scribbling out here in the SW.....

    I want the article BUT it can't be read on a Simple Touch Nook!

    I want the article BUT it can't be read on a Simple Touch Nook! The formatting was not changed, so the drop caps are in black and the rest of the text is WHITE FONT (yes, I know I'm shouting, the better to get someone's attention, maybe). And, since the Simple Touch has no white on black option, it's a blank screen, except for the header.

    Don't buy it if you want to read it on your Simple Touch - ePub formatting 101 - FAIL.

    Should have been left as an article

    As a Vanity Fair article, this was probably a good read. Padded out to a short ebook, it drags.

    Can't read on Simple Touch Nook. Purchased last December, cann

    Can't read on Simple Touch Nook.

    Purchased last December, cannot see the text, only occasional drop caps. Tech support did NOT fix the problem (or refund the book), just said to archive and unarchive to try to fix it. which didn't -- the book is formatted incorrectly.
