This atlas is a thorough, user-friendly guide to interpreting diagnostic ultrasound images of the vasculature and blood flow in the neck. Featuring 177 sonographic images from actual cases, the book demonstrates a broad range of clinical findings and explains the underlying pathophysiology. Each chapter begins with an overview of a particular type of finding and then presents sonographic images from cases, with detailed legends and comments on the diagnosis. Bulleted lists of "Pearls and Pitfalls" based on the authors' extensive experience follow the case examples. Each chapter ends with multiple-choice questions and answers to aid in study and board review.

Reviewer: Douglas Erik Elliott, M.D.(University of Colorado Health Sciences Center)
Description: Arranged anatomically, this atlas succinctly highlights the normal, variant, and pathologic sonographic features of the cervical vasculature.
Purpose: According to its authors, the purpose is to serve as a teaching and reference guide to extracranial neurosonography. Not limited to atherosclerotic disease, the objectives are met with the inclusion of the vertebral arterial and internal jugular venous systems, as well as the effect of various cardiac cycles.
Audience: The targeted audience are general practitioners who rely frequently on carotid ultrasound in their patient management. The authors, who are neurologists, bring the reader through the step-by-step process of vascular ultrasound of the neck, beginning with the physical exam.
Features: Beginning with basic normal anatomy and basic sonographic techniques, the book continues with outlining the pathologic processes that can lead to cerebrovascular events. Unique features include the pearls and pitfalls and the question sections, which help the reader keep on task. The images and interspersed color plates correlate well with the text and enhance pattern recognition. Radiologists, however, will notice the lack of correlation with other imaging modalities and the limited technical information.
Assessment: Useful for a wide audience, clinicians with an eye for imaging or those incorporating limited neurosonography in their practice will find this atlas easy to reference. Imaging specialists will not find this text as complete as others currently on their shelves.
A concise atlas focusing on neck vasculature as imaged using diagnostic ultrasound, written by a physician-professor and professor emeritus of neurology. The volume begins with coverage of duplex scanning of the cervical vessels, followed by the normal configuration of the aortic arch and carotid system. Next covered is normal hemodynamics, carotid system pathology, morphologic aspects of the plaque, anatomic variants and congenital abnormalities of the extracranial carotid system. The interpretation of typical abnormal pulses and alteration of the cardiac rhythm is then covered. Final chapters cover normal vertebral artery hemodynamics and pathology, normal internal jugular vein and incompetent valves, and artifact versus artifacts. Each high quality illustration is accompanied by one or two paragraphs of explanation and a precise reference for further elaboration of the topic. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (

    Outstanding for vascular ultrasound.

This book is a summary of 37 years experience in evaluation of neck vessels using ultrasound. Examples of all of the pathology are found with references and questions for study for techs and physicians. Reading this book covers the subject in an atlas. Outstanding.
