VOYA, October 2014 (Vol. 37, No. 4) - Kate Neff
This third novel in the Vicious Deep series finds hero Tristan Hart, who now knows he is part merman, fighting not just for himself and his love interest but also for the future of the seas. He is a wisecracking goofball who always seems to do the right thing in the end. The story’s action takes the reader from the land to the deep seas, to a magical land filled with river people whose motivations are murky. There are lots of characters, and though the family trees in the back of the book are helpful, anyone new to the series may want to start at the beginning before jumping into this third novel. Although Tristan is an older teenager, and there is some colorful language throughout, this series would probably appeal most to younger teen readers. The series already has a passionate fan base, so faithful readers will enjoy this installment. Reviewer: Kate Neff; Ages 12 to 15.

Gr 9 Up— Tristan is running out of time to save the girl he loves and secure his rightful position as heir to the Sea Throne in this dramatic final chapter of the "Vicious Deep" series. The fantasy epic features a diverse cast of mermen, sea witches, vampires, fairies, and all manner of supernatural creatures. Fans will be sad to see this trilogy come to a close.

Those who enjoy pure, lightweight fantasy fluff will find all they want in the conclusion of the Vicious Deep series.Mer-human hybrid Tristan descends, of course, from sea royalty, although his uncle Kurt really has a more direct claim to the sea throne. However, the evil Silver Queen Nieve holds the reins of power now. The book picks up amid action that recaps the previous books and sends Tristan off to a magical island so that he may prepare himself for the epic battle to come. There, he must battle the monstrous Naga, with unexpected results. At last ready for the big fight, he returns to Coney Island, where he unites with vampires to help him in the battle. Yes, merpeople and vampires. All the while, Tristan is plagued by vivid visions of the future. The final battle plays out with magical creatures such as a giant turtle and a sea horse the size of a whale. Córdova lightens the narrative by including a sprinkling of comedy drawn from Tristan’s cocky Brooklyn attitude. The relationships involved are so complex that readers new to the series would be well-advised to start with the first book, as the author includes little recap, and even fans may need a refresher. Tristan’s true love, captured by Nieve, plays almost no role, which keeps the focus on action.Fans of the mermaid craze will enjoy it. Others may struggle. (Paranormal romance. 12-18)

I loved author Zoraida Cordova¿s The Vicious Deep series since I

I loved author Zoraida Cordova’s The Vicious Deep series since I read the very first book. It was a new take on mermaids with a fun protagonist and a fast-paced story to boot. It was a fun time and every time I would enter her world of murderous mermaids, I wouldn’t want to leave. It pains me to know that this is the last book in the series. I don’t know how I’ll let go of Tristan and Layla and all of the characters who interact with them in the series. Obviously, The Vast and Brutal Sea would the epic conclusion. Romance, betrayal, war—I was ready for it all and I wasn’t left disappointed.

The Vast and Brutal Sea takes place exactly where The Savage Blue has left off. Tristan finds himself first at the mercy of a tribe of mermaids on a seemingly deserted island where he is reunited with an old friend. He knows that in two days all Hell will break loose. And with the Silver Mermaid—Nieve—having all the power and his best friend and sort-of-not-really girlfriend Layla, Tristan is stuck between a rock and a hard place. When Tristan is betrayed by Kurt, who plans to take the Throne for himself, he knows that there is only one way to win this battle and that it will require returning to the place where everything began.

What I loved most about The Vast and Brutal Sea is that it begins with action and it ends with action. There is no in-between. The Vast and Brutal Sea is everything that a final novel in a series should be. Action. Action. Action. And it’s all relevant to the plot. There are so many things that happen in The Vast and Brutal Sea that make it incredibly addictive and make you not want to put it down until you know exactly who will win, who will lose and who will survive.

The stakes are obviously high in the novel. Especially for Tristan. Nieve has Layla, she has everything set in place for her plan to work out. She’s dangerous and everybody knows it and it is only a matter of time before she shows just how dangerous she really is. There are chapters that I adored in The Vast and Brutal Sea that took place revolving solely around Nieve. They were beautifully written and added a lot of depth to her character that wasn’t there in the past two novels.

Betrayal is a big part of The Vast and Brutal Sea. There is so many plot twists and unexpected character deaths and betrayals. It left me reeling, constantly. Cordova writes it all in a way that is humorous when it needs to be, easy-flowing and at the same time very simplistic. My only real complaint would be certain scenes where Tristan’s character attempts to be witty in certain circumstances and just comes out looking a bit foolish. Other than that, The Vast and Brutal Sea was great. Truly, truly great.

The conclusion is good. It’s strong. I know that the series might be at its end. I’m so sad that I’ll never be able to enter this amazing world that has been built up over the past three books with beautiful lore and characters. This is a series that I will always think fondly of. I personally hope that there might be some sort of spin-off. That we might get to see more, perhaps not form behind Tristan’s eyes, but just more.

I would recommend the Vicious Deep trilogy to readers who are looking for an easy read that is well-written and fun. These are novels that have their serious moments but are also humorous and funny when they need to be. There’s romance but not too much romance. There’s lots and lots of action. Plot twists. This is a genuinely good series that I highly recommend.

The trilogy is complete, and in the most epic way!

Tristan is at a loss. Betrayed by those he thought were closest to him and having very little to go on to continue his quest as a champion, he finds himself questioning himself over everything. But regardless of his self-doubt, he knows that he must try his best and continue on. This isn't about him, never was. He knows that he has a battle to get to soon, but how will he get to it, no one truly knows yet. Well, maybe an oracle or two might, but they're looking to gain something before they'll help... and it just feels like nothing is ever going to go right for the half-merman who thinks too much like a human to know what is best for the sea and its inhabitants.

As much as we see Tristan grow and mature, he never loses himself nor does he lose sight of his goals. Whenever something gets in his way, he looks for another. And even though this may be a battle he might lose, he knows that he'll do it while trying his best. He never lets his heart over power his mind, and vice versa. He is true to his word, even if his words are sarcastic and may be of the kind that the seafolk may not understand at times. And no matter what situation Tristan may find himself in - danger, pain, loss and more -  his sense of humor, quick wit and thoughtfulness always shines through to guide him through to get him to the next level.

The action! So many battles to get through! Mystical creatures galore - the author does not hold back on the details and I was able to picture everything clearly in my mind. The mystical beauty of each and every character, even the ugly mean ones, were fabulous - I truly do wish to see this in film one day.

I have only one small gripe - I really wish that the author would have considered giving us a better glimpse into Tristan and his friends/families future. His parents were barely mentioned, and they had quite the surprise in book 2 that was barely mentioned in this part of the story. I am curious to know if the author may have something planned in the future for some of these characters - I can totally see a spin-off happening...

The perfect ending to an amazing and well-written trilogy!
I cannot wait to see what Zoraida Cordova will give us next!!!

(I received an eARC from the publisher/tour host for my honest review. My thoughts are all my own.)
