Editorial Reviews

The Vatican is the world's smallest nation, but don't let its 0.17-square-mile size fool you. Within its protective medieval walls are not only a world famous cathedral and chapels but also art-crammed museums, extensive archives, a bank, a supermarket, a railroad station, and a heliport. Even frequent visitors to St. Peter's Basilica and Square catch only fleeting glimpses of life in the Holy See. In this lavish coffee-table hardcover, Vatican insider and church historian Father Michael Collins uses his rare combination of credentials to lead readers on a fascinating, detailed tour of the Holy See at work and worship. His guided tour takes us into every dimension of Vatican life: the history, the architecture, the holy seasons, the people, the daily life, and the religious, artistic, and archaeological treasures.

Beautiful pictures found in this book. I went to Italy and The Vatican City a few years ago and found this book recently and picked it up, and it is a beautiful reminder of my trip. It is full of history and information as well. I really enjoy flipping through this book and remembering my trip.

The Vatican is a very comprehensive photo history of St Pauls Cathedral, Vatican City, the art collections and also has interviews with a member of the Swiss guard and a choir member.

Regardless if you are a Catholic or not, it is a wonderful book to browse as it contains phenomonal photos with great descriptions.

This book is great for anyone who wants to learn more about the Vatican - the center of the Roman Catholic faith. This book has hundreds of beautiful and detailed pictures of everything in and around the Vatican. The book tells about the history of Rome, the Vatican, the popes, the Holy See, and much more. This book also tells you about the Vatican's calendar [Roman Catholic calendar] and what happens, the architecture of the Vatican, daily life in the Vatican, people in the Vatican, treasures of the Vatican, and more.

I bought this as a momento of our trip to Rome. This book is much more than just a picture book. It is not only enormously informative, it is a beautiful piece and would make a lovely gift. The picture does not do the cover justice - the gold portion of the cover has a gold on gold tapestry pattern and is actually a hardboard overlay above/below the picture on the cover (a three dimensional cover). It looks and feels like a very expensive book. Well worth the money.

I bought this book for my self having been to the Vatican and thought it would be a interesting addition to my library. I was truly blown away. Could hardly wait to get a second copy to give as a Christmas gift to my Priest. It has any and everything you ever wanted to know about the Vatican along with a brief history of it's noble beginnings. What a great find. Thank you Mr Collins for your research and hard work. It was well worth it.
