Overview

After the "Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis" and the "Fantasia on Greensleeves," it's anyone's guess what would constitute the orchestral favorites of Ralph Vaughan Williams. While reasonable listeners would probably agree that Vaughan Williams was England's greatest composer after Purcell, after the awesome "Thomas Tallis Fantasia" and the touching "Greensleeves Fantasia," most of the rest of his orchestral music is fairly poorly known outside of the sceptered isles. But while English listeners' hearts will swell at the thought of the misty, moisty opening of "Norfolk Rhapsody No. 1" and "In the Fen Country," even the most loyal fan of Vaughan Williams might be unable to call to mind the "Burlesca Ostinata" of the "Concerto Grosso" and none would say it constitutes an orchestral favorite. Be that as it may, this 2001 recording of James Judd leading the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in a program called "Ralph Vaughan Williams Orchestral Favorites" is not likely to convince old Vaughan Williams fans or convert new Vaughan Williams fans. Judd's interpretations are more turgid than weighty and more slow than soulful. In a word, his phrasing doesn't breathe. The New Zealand Symphony is a capable enough orchestra but they sound more rough than rugged and more raw than rapt. Judd and the New Zealand Symphony has made fine recordings before and no doubt will again. But this recording is merely acceptable. Naxos' super audio sound is a bit warmer and a little louder than its digital sound.
