Overview

Ralph Vaughan Williams's Mass in G Minor is one of the glories of the 20th-century choral repertoire, and it belongs in the concert hall just as much as in church. The Toronto-based Elora Festival Singers give a warm, passionate performance here, swaying ecstatically in the Sanctus and bringing an appropriate atmosphere of mystery to the Agnus Dei. The motets, anthems, and hymns that fill out the program are generally more forthright and extroverted, and if the choir occasionally sacrifices beauty of tone for a sense of unbounded joy, it is a small price to pay to partake of such infectiously spirited performances. The recorded sound is spacious and rich. The booklet includes texts and translations for the Latin works. A welcome addition to the growing discography of Vaughan Williams's choral works.
