Overview

Gleaming new recordings of Vaughan Williams's Fifth and Ninth Symphonies with the Bournemouth Symphony led by the Dutch conductor Kees Bakels are perhaps the most impressive installment yet in Naxos's cycle. As in his countryman Bernard Haitink's series for EMI, Bakels speaks Vaughan Williams's gentle, crusty, intensely English language fluently -- and he does it for about a third the price. Both in the valedictory Ninth, with its trio of melancholy, frequently menacing saxophones, and in that most beautiful and characteristic of the Vaughan Williams symphonies, the mysterious, ravishing Fifth, these interpretations are fresh, unaffected, handsomely played and recorded. Even if they don't put those of Boult, Barbirolli and Previn completely in the shade, even by Naxos standards, this is a remarkable bargain.
