This gloriously restored mansion in downtown Portland, with its white tablecloths, large wooden relief sculptures, and stately atmosphere, actually plays second fiddle to the food. Plainfield's Mayur has some of the best Indian food in the entire country and shows it off like a peacock. Indeed the word "Mayur" means peacock in Sanskrit. Start with Bhel Salad (a selection of vegetables served with spicy tamarind sauce) or luscious Tomato Coconut Soup. The entrées show a refinement in presentation and seasoning found in few Indian restaurants and are accompanied by a brilliant selection of house-made chutneys and pickles. The Shahi Subji Korma is a soothing blend of vegetables in almond yogurt sauce. Feeling particularly celebratory? Finish the meal with a two-hundred-year-old Madeira. Entrées from $14.95 to $17.95.
