Raised on a typical American diet of meat, dairy, and eggs, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau was shocked by what she learned when she read Diet for a New America at age nineteen. No longer able to justify eating animals and their products, Colleen began a journey of discovery that continues to this day. Determined to raise awareness about animal suffering, she founded Compassionate Cooks to be a voice for the more than 45 billion land and sea animals killed every year in the United States for human consumption. Her work is dedicated to them.

 

Having earned a master's degree in English literature, Colleen uses her writing and communication skills to raise consciousness of the animal issues about which so many people are unaware.     Every animal-loving vegan will appreciate this book!

    I *LOVE* this book! Thank you, Colleen Patrick-Goodreau, for creating it. I find comfort, encouragement, and useful tips in the short, easy-to-digest sections and beautiful photos of rescued animals. I had the pleasure of seeing Colleen talk at the NAVS Vegetarian Summerfest this year, and was happy to find that a lot of the thoughts and suggestions she shared in her speeches are in this book, which means I can keep the inspirations of her speeches in front of me, in print, and refer to them any day of the year. A little word of caution - Thursdays can be hard to read b/c some of them involve descriptions of animal suffering (in the context of writers raising awareness), so I skim/skip those, but the other days are wonderful and so helpful (and more than make up for the Thursdays). It combines tips for talking to others about veganism (e.g. when confronted with hostility) with stories & pictures of rescued animals and information about various kinds of food (e.g. quinoa, kale, etc.) and how to cook it, with some recipes I'm eager to try out. In sum, I think this is a terrific resource for actual and aspiring vegans and vegetarians and I highly recommend it.

    Love this book! It is a great reminder as to why I am a vegetarian and why I want to help these animals!
