Overview

Our new kitty likes to hide.
A nuestra nueva gatita le gusta esconderse.

She hides under the table,
Se esconde debajo de la mesa,

inside a flowerpot,
dentro de una maceta

and behind the curtains.
y detrás de las cortinas.

We call out to her,
La llamamos, pero . . .

but will she ever come close enough to pet?
¿se acercará lo suficiente como para acariciarla?

Here, kitty, kitty!
¡Ven, gatita, ven!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dorina Lazo Gilmore
The three children in this book have a playful new kitty who likes to hide in the silliest, most unpredictable spots. They chase the kitty through the house and find him under the bed, behind the couch, behind Grandma's shoes, inside the doll crib, and inside the flowerpot on the porch. The book gives us a tour through the family's home. Bright illustrations by Maribel Suarez include unique touches, like colorful embroidered cushions on the couch or a photograph of the children's parents, who are not present in this book. Preschoolers will especially connect with this hide-and-seek format book. The sweet and playful story could appeal to children from all cultures and backgrounds. This is the third book in the "My Family/Mi familia" series. The author, Pat Mora, is the founder of the family literacy initiative El dia de los ninos/ El dia de los libros, Children's Day/ Book Day housed at the American Library Association. This book could be used as a tool to help parents and children who are learning English or Spanish. Reviewer: Dorina Lazo Gilmore
Kirkus Reviews
This entry in Mora's highly successful bilingual series My Family/Mi Familia introduces a family's energetic new kitty/gatita, whose mischievous antics inside and outside the house are all forgiven with warm affection. Suarez's full-page illustrations in bright watercolors depict a traditional home, featuring some Latino-accented patterns in sofa pillows, blankets and rugs and accentuating the cozily familiar setting of this simple bilingual tale. Cockeyed, dimpled smiles adorn every round face, human, feline and canine, making it clear to readers that there's more game than worry to the chase. "I almost touch her, / Casi la toco, / but she runs and hides again. / pero corre y se esconde otra vez." Chasing and coaxing finally lead to kitty, their "soft (and sweet) friend / amiga dulce," to come close enough for some love. Preschoolers learning or proficient in either language will smile along.
