Overview

Spectacular full-color photographs introduce Earth's "sister planet," from its scorching deserts and clouds of sulfuric acid to the crushing pressure of its atmosphere. From Kirkus Reviews: "In the same large, square format as Simon's books on other planets, a clear, concise text draws on the latest findings and the best of recent color photos. Venus has her special charms--the hottest planet in the solar system, covered with clouds of sulphuric acid, with bizarre surface details--all emerging from photos and radar maps taken from earlier Russian expeditions and NASA's Magellan spacecraft, which is still orbiting Venus. Our sister planet? Not even human siblings exhibit such diversity, and why this is so is an intriguing puzzle.” Newly updated (2012).

Describes the movements and physical features of the planet Venus and recent findings about its climate and surface.

Asimov's Science Fiction

Children's Literature - Judy Katsh
Beautiful. Inspiring. Instructive. All of the books in Seymour Simon's series of up-close looks at celestial bodies could be so described. This voyage to Venus is no exception. Black pages with white print alternate with more traditionally printed pages and full color drawings and photographs to produce a book that's the next best thing to a field trip. The text is easy to read without being limited in the information it presents. There is historical information as well as current photographs from satellite probes. There is no table of contents or index, but the brevity of the text will allow most information seekers to easily find what they are looking for and most armchair travelers to more than enjoy the ride. 1998 (orig.

One of Seymour Simon's great planet books

I'm an elementary media specialist. We have always had these books in our library; it is nice to know some of them are available as eBooks. Some of the main planets are missing, though (Jupiter, Mars). I hope he will eventually make the whole series available.
