Children's Literature - Kristy Lyn Sutorius
Librarians looking to revamp their planet collections after Pluto's demotion to dwarf planet will find the "Buddy Books" series suits the needs of their early readers quite well. This title takes kids on a tour of the planet's most interesting features, including its two large continents, its thick cloudy layer, and the structure of the planet. Interesting facts about Venus's extreme heat and its rotation are also brought to light. Kids will marvel at the difference in Venus's appearance in various pictures, which may confuse the younger ones and require more explanation. Japan's upcoming missions to our "sister" planet may spur kids to chose this over other titles in the series. Basic terms that young astronomers must know are highlighted in orange and defined in the glossary of important words. For another take at the same reading level, be sure to look at the planet titles in Teresa Wimmer's "My First Look at Planets" series. An otherwise nice addition to an area that will need closer attention in the coming months. Reviewer: Kristy Lyn Sutorius
