Children's Literature - Kristi Bernard
Bullying has been around for a long time. We see it in the news because victims are dying. Bullying is intentional and is meant to hurt, scare or humiliate. There are four major forms of bullying: verbal, physical, social and now cyber. This guide will help bring an understanding of how to combat bullying and that it is everyone’s responsibility to stop it. Verbal bullying is when words are used to hurt. Remarks can be geared towards someone who is of a different race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion to name a few. This guide will also help readers better understand the victim. Each chapter covers a personal experience as victims share their stories. There is also a chapter on understanding the bully. Personal stories shared by bullies depict why they do it. Through-out these pages there is a caption for “Did You Know” which offers helpful tips and explanation of bad behavior. The back of the book has a quiz that will help readers see if they have bullied someone unintentionally or on purpose. Resources, a glossary, and hotline phone numbers can also be found. Rivkin has done a great job in researching and sharing the personal stories of victims and their aggressors. This non-fiction guide would be a great tool for teachers and parents to share with kids to help them face their fears. Education on bullying is something everyone should know. Reviewer: Kristi Bernard; Ages 12 up.
