Words as Medicine
What to say to your children to get them through the bumps, bruises, and crises of childhood.

Falling off a bike, having a bad dream, getting stitches...sometimes a kiss isn't enough to make it all better. But what you say to your child in those first moments of pain or fear could make all the difference.

Using techniques the authors have taught to doctors, nurses, and first responders, Verbal First Aid(tm) explains how words can be used to promote healing from burns, bruises, nightmares, asthma attacks, and more. It provides scripts and tips on how to short-circuit traumatic memories, sometimes just by speaking a sentence or two.

This revolutionary book gives parents the responses they need to immediately stabilize their children's emotions. And these methods will build a foundation of confidence and inner strength that will help kids heal at the deepest level, and weather whatever hardships and difficulties they encounter throughout life.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Verbal First Aid(tm) is far more than a parenting guide. It is a profound prescription for nurturing our children and evolving civilization to the healthiest level possible!"
-Bruce H. Lipton, PhD, cell biologist and bestselling author of The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter and Miracles and Spontaneous Evolution

The research agrees that traumatic experiences and parents’ responses to them can have a life-long impact on children, coloring their future outlook and abilities to navigate stressful situations appropriately. The authors do an excellent job of illustrating children’s reactions to stress at various developmental stages, as well as outlining the science behind the mind-body connection. Addressing everyday occurrences like asthma attacks and nosebleeds, in addition to more stressful situations such as preparing for surgery and unplanned catastrophic events, the authors give sample dialogs and responses designed to address the existing fear as well as provide “a teaching moment after the initial fear is over.” While it is impossible to plan for accidents, it is within our power to prepare our responses. The authors (The Worst Is Over) have taught verbal first aid to doctors, nurses, and first-responders around the world, and their effort here to bring these skills directly to parents is empowering and on target. Recommended for any child care worker, responder, and certainly for parents.—Julianne J. Smith, Ypsilanti Dist. Lib., MI
