This recording of Il Trovatore offers excellent performances by all the solosists, except for some of the sound. The choruses are barely caught on the microphone. Placido Domingo is young, and his voice is brillant, espically "Di Quella Pira". Leontyne Price is in her prime as Leonora, a role that is very difficult, but she pulls it off. As Azucena, Fiorenza Cossotto is at home. Her voice is slightly shrill, which allows her to pull off Azucena's craziness. As Conte Di Luna, Sherrill Milnes stole the show. His voice is at home in Verdian operas, and he is always intelligant and alert. His "Il Balen" was one of the best in the opera. Zubin Mehta however, can not give the music flexibility without losing momentum. This is one of the best recordings of Il Trovatore out there. Was this review helpful?
