    Unexpectedly Marvelous

As one who has listened to and carefully studied Verdi for many decades I was not expecting a recording of such quality from Naxos. This set is astonishing value, not merely an inexpensive alternative to other more costlier sets, but one that is so much more than competitive. Indeed, it might just be the best uncut"TROVATORE" on the market. Clearly Humburg has a steadier, more convincingly lyrical style than the overrated Muti or the sonambulistic Giulini. Servile is simply superb as Di Luna. The rest are equally fine. For singing alone I will return to the Björling, Milanov, Warren set on RCA - but it is compromised by heavy cuts. For a compete "Trovatore" in modern sound, this Naxos set capture Verdi's dramatic and lyrical style better than all the others.
