Overview

The 26 operas of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, including Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, La Traviata, & Aida, are among the worlds best-loved music. Born in 1813, Verdi was the son of an obscure innkeeper. His musical talent became obvious at an early age. He started to become a celebrity with his third opera, Nabucco, & Il Trovatore became the most popular opera all over the world in the 1850s. Verdis private life was marked by the tragic loss of his wife & children to illness, & by scandal when he lived with the singer Giuseppina Strepponi for 10 years before they married. Yet he kept composing all his life, completing his last opera, Falstaff, at age 79.
