Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristina Cassidy
The "America the Beautiful" series explores state history, geography, government, people, and the economy. In addition to detailed, child-friendly text, each book is packed with charts, graphs, maps, timelines, and state symbols. Each book closes with a "Project Room" section that includes sample class projects, a timeline, glossary, list of fast facts, biographical dictionary of important people in Vermont history, and a list of other resources. In Vermont, the first chapter explores the state's geography, including mountains, pastures, and lakes. It also describes Vermont's native plants and animals. The next four chapters detail Vermont's history, from the native peoples all the way up through the present. Chapter 6 describes modern Vermont's diverse population and unique culture. Chapter 7 describes Vermont's unique government system, which relies heavily on local town meetings. Chapter 8 details Vermont's economy and local industries, from maple syrup to computer chips. Chapter 9 includes a travel guide ideal for students to create class projects or reports. Teachers will find this series a useful and entertaining classroom resource for students in the middle grades. Reviewer: Kristina Cassidy
Children's Literature
Vermont is perhaps the quintessential New England state. And this book, which is part of the "This Land is Your Land" series, gives young readers a close-up look at the small state. Organized in easy to use sections, the book begins with an overview of the state's best known features. Then, there's a map that shows where Vermont is geographically in the United States and there's a detailed state map. A brief history section describes the region's Native American who first inhabited the state before French explorers and British colonists laid claim to it. Vermont's state and local governments, with their town meetings, are also highlighted. A section on Vermonters at work lists the common occupations in dairies, granite mines, maple syrup production, and corporations like IBM. The section on "Getting to Know Vermonters" describes the state's festivals and fairs as well as its many writers and artists. A section on exploring Vermont encourages young travelers to visit President Calvin Coolidge's and President Chester Arthur's homes, in addition to visits to museums and hikes in the state's glorious outdoors. The back of the book provides important dates, a glossary, interesting facts, state symbols, recipes, the state song, brief biographies of famous Vermonters, and lists of books, websites, and addresses for more information. This is a must have for any school library. 2004, Compass Point Books, Ages 8 to 12.
