Interviews & Essays

From the Author:

Why I love co-authoring Vermont, An Explorer's Guide:
People frequently ask me how I got "this job" and I have to explain that I made it up. Over the past 30 years I have written more than 1000 New England travel articles for The Boston Globe and roughly 20 years ago I began incorporating these stories into a series of books, which were the first to describe each of the New England states region by region and in practical detail. Vermont was the second in this series and half way through writing the first edition my mother became gravely ill so my publisher, Peter Jennison, swung in as the co-author. That was lucky! Peter, a novelist,7th generation Vermonter and historian, is a great asset to the book which--we think--combines some great word pictures of Vermont's least as well as best known places with all the detail info you need to explore them. I myself travel thousands of miles around the state every year, sleep as many places as I can and walk into hundreds of lodging places. I also check out shops, restaurant and take time to hike, boat and otherwise keep enjoying Vermont, which just keeps getting better the more I explore it.
