Overview

A spectacularly opulent relic of royal wealth and power comes alive in Versailles. Highlighting the château’s vibrant, tumultuous past, the book covers everything from its metamorphosis from humble hunting lodge to palace, to the dismantling of its collections during the French Revolution and its restoration and status as a UNESCO World Heritage site today. In addition, the singular château is explored from top to bottom in an extravagantly extensive photographic tour that reveals the many priceless artistic and architectural treasures of this palace of palaces.

Editorial Reviews

Alan Riding
Short texts by Valérie Bajou, smoothly translated by Antony Shugaar, provide a potted history of the palace and its gardens as well as of the smaller adjacent chateaus, the Grand Trianon and the Petit Trianon. But some 300 exquisite color photographs serve as the real guides to the palace's royal apartments, its great reception halls and its artworks, in addition to its gardens and the two Trianons.

I found this book to be an excellent presentation of the greatest chateau in the world. Its is beautifully presented in an exhibition of photos. It pictures the extravagance of this era. The history as presented is clear and precise. I enjoyed this book.

By absorbing the pictures in this book, you will come as close to being at Versailles as you can without actually going. A beautiful place - a beautiful book.
