Introduction
From that soul place from which we all come, life begins with us having no consciousness or recollection of how we came into existence. We come into this world having given no consent or vote on whether we want to be here or not. This is life and how all of humanity came about. With no vote or say so, in which family we want to reside in or be brought up in; all of mankind is dealt a separate and individual hand, a chance of a fortune or misfortune with entrance in this world.
Life as I have known it has not always been easy or a handout but instead it has been a struggle for progress indeed. Escaping the civil war in Liberia 17 years ago; my family and I came to the United States of America in hope of a better life. Life in Liberia was alright and my family was well off. However, the civil turmoil in Liberia escalated and when the opportunity to attend the Memphis Theological Seminary came about, my father took his family and we came abroad. Our lives could have ended at any time in Liberia during the war but because of God's grace, our lives did not end due to the war. God spared our lives and a further struggle would begin in a different form, by coming to America. Adjusting and becoming acculturated into American society was smooth for my siblings and me but a little challenge for my parents. Financially we struggled to make ends meet, with both parents seeking and furthering their education. With just enough money to get by and make life, my parents were unemployed for nine months until my mother landed a night job at FedEx. This was tough, especially coming from a background and environment where we didn't have to struggle, in that we come from an elite family in Liberia. This was not only a new way of life to our parents but us as well. As a family we had to get accustomed to living from paycheck to paycheck and even on welfare. Attending Catholic school seemed out of the question and learning and adjusting to the American way of life was now our new challenge. My siblings and I attended public schools up to sixth grade. Mom and dad were then able to make all the necessary sacrifices to put us in a prestigious Catholic school, Memphis Catholic, which would ultimately help shape my life and future.
