Overview

Patrick Blanc, botanist and artist, is world famous as the inventor of the Vertical Garden. This new, updated edition of his book, The Vertical Garden, includes his latest achievements and projects, which are bolder than ever.
Nobody is more familiar than Blanc with the secrets of the plants, from all over the world, that live on almost nothing, in the most unlikely situations, carpeting the forest understory in semi-darkness or clinging to rocky cliff faces. From Paris to Bangkok, from New York to Singapore, Blanc invites nature to flourish on the walls of museums, shopping malls, private homes, big hotels, and skyscrapers. His works have brought a breath of fresh air to urban environments, changing our view of the cityscape, orchestrating and bringing art into the heart of the city, transforming concrete walls into refuges for biodiversity.

Editorial Reviews

The Midwest Book Review
“[A] must for anyone who wants to create a magnificent arrangement of plant life…”
Dominique Browning - The New York Times
“This book is fascinating….[T]here should be a vertical garden on every block of every city in the world.”
David Sokol - GreenSource
“Besides charm, Blanc infuses The Vertical Garden with generosity. He reveals his methods for creating vertical gardens, from building the armature…to his selection and arrangement of plant species….Blanc attempts a critical eye, elucidating the poetry of his work and his oeuvre’s prospects for changing architectural vocabulary.”
Bookwatch
“[E]xquisite….filled with gorgeous photos and plenty of practical insights, and is recommended both for general-interest libraries strong in home and garden design and for college-level art collections strong in architecture.”
Jacqueline Soule - Explorer
“[D]eserves a place on the gardeners bookshelf….[T]he ideas and techniques for installation are applicable anywhere.”
The New York Times
“[D]ream-like constructions of a modern-day Henri Rousseau, whose single-minded botanical pursuit has become an art form.”
BBC Gardens Illustrated
“[O]f equal value and interest to the serious horticulturist and botanist, artist, landscape and garden designer, architect and engineer…beautifully produced.”
Landscape Architecture Australia
“[B]eautifully conveys and illustrates the fruits of Blanc’s lifelong passion.”
The Reckless Gardener
“Will have wide appeal both to amateur gardeners who are interested in innovat[ion]...and to students and practitioners of garden design…”
EcoTech
“[C]omprehensively illustrated….thorough and fascinating.”
The Age
“His creations reflect natural habitats around the world from waterfalls to river banks, rocky outcrops and forest understoreys….Stunning photography.”
Dominique Browning
This book is fascinating. Blanc is a scientist and researcher who has studied plant life all over the world. His mission is to create gardens that trail down the sides of buildings by "planting" them in rot-proof textiles bound to plastic boards, using an irrigation system to keep the roots moist.
—The New York Times
Portland Book Review
“This book is a testament to Blanc’s vision, dreams and artistry in a life-altering way. You will be mesmerized from beginning to end with the intricate plans and the attention to detail that is not often seen.”
Green Places
“[I]nspirational....[V]ertical gardens like Blanc's and their humbler green wall cousins are set to transform our urban jungle into something more closely resembling those found in nature.”
GardenDesignUnlimited (UK)
“[I]n-depth look at plants and their natural habitats, and how he developed the technique for successfully clothing buildings . . . . [S]tunning photographs.”
Landscape Architecture Magazine
“This book will provide endless inspiration for landscape architects.”

Excellent choice for novice or professional

Stunning in it's layout and photography, The Vertical Garden is a book that transcends the Coffee table genres. Patrick Blanc has truly brought the rain forest to the city. This is horticulture and gardening like we've never seen before. Magnificent
