Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Simple text, frequently only one word to a page and uncomplicated illustrations are the hallmark of this board book series. Olaf the elephant and his friend Venus the mouse head out for a day at the park and a picnic. They see a dog, a squirrel and a boy in a stroller. They stop to have their picnic by a statue and then end up splashing around in a pond and settling down for a nap in the grass. After reading all four books in the series, it is interesting to note that they all end with a frolic in the water and Olaf and Venus taking a snooze. These books have a definite European flavor. 2000, Candlewick, $4.99. Ages 2 to 4. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

PreS-Four board books featuring an elephant, Olaf, and a mouse, Venus. On the left side of each spread, an object is placed on a white background, with one word underneath it. On the facing page, the two animals are shown engaging in some activity that includes the object. Sometimes these items are related to the topic but often it is a stretch of the imagination to get the connection. Car features a porcupine, a plane, a bird, and, at the final destination, a beach. In Home, objects represented are a door, chair, bed, telephone, bathtub, bed, and cheese. In Park, a squirrel, dog, statue, pond, grass, and a boy in a stroller are featured. In Shopping, Olaf is trying on big brown shoes while Venus is putting on little red ones. Babies and toddlers will enjoy looking for the items in the colorful illustrations with objects that are easy to identify.-Olga R. A quartet of brightly hued, near-wordless board books charts the daily rounds of best pals Olaf the Elephant and Venus the Mouse. The storylines are cleverly conjured from just half a dozen droll scenarios, and young children will get a thrill out of spotting the familiar objects (dog, telephone, chair, cheese, and so on) highlighted on each sturdy page.
