Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
It is the year 1775 in Williamsburg, Virginia. The British Crown has control over the colonies of America, but there is unrest in the colonies and those called Patriots are seeking to gain the right of self-government from Great Britain. In the midst of this political upheaval, Elizabeth and her friend, Felicity, find ways to annoy Elizabeth's sister Annabelle, who is on an active search for a husband. When Elizabeth's father is contacted by an old acquaintance from London in an attempt to establish a marriage alliance between the two families, Annabelle is ecstatic. Elizabeth is less than thrilled when she discovers her parents plan to send her to London with Annabelle for the safety of both girls. This title is part of the "American Girl" series and, as in all the titles in the series, the reader gets a look into the lives of young girls in history. Supplemental chapters introduce the reader to another title in the series, and information is given on marriage rituals of this period. All of the titles in this series are excellent choices for upper-elementary and middle-school collections. 2005, Pleasant Company Publications, Ages 8 to 12.

School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-Ten-year-old Elizabeth Cole lives in Williamsburg in 1775. She and her friend Felicity Merriman (from the "Felicity" books in the American Girl series) delight in teasing Elizabeth's proper, but boy-crazed, 16-year-old sister, Annabelle. The pranks backfire, leading to the threat that Elizabeth will be taken to England when Annabelle marries Lord Harry Lacey. In protest, she concentrates her mischief on prissy Miss Priscilla, Harry's domineering sister. This inspires mild-mannered Harry to stand up for himself, prompting Annabelle to show a glimpse of spine, too. The book includes six pages of illustrated historical data on "Courtship and Marriage in 1775." Elizabeth and Felicity are charming, well drawn, and appealing. Except for Priscilla and Harry, secondary characters are paper-doll thin. Annabelle may rise to pasteboard depth, but before the story concludes, readers find her reverting to her old ways. The book is long on historical contextual detail, and the style is highly accessible without attempting to re-create historical dialogue.-Marlene Johnson, Paradise Education Center, Surprise, AZ Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    I loved this book

Very Funny, Elizabeth! by Valerie Tripp is a great book. I liked the funny pranks Elizabeth and her friend Felicity play on Elizabeth's snobby older sister, Annabelle. In the story, Annabelle gets engaged. She will move to England and is having to prepare for this with lessons on proper etiquette from her future husband's older sister. Elizabeth volunteers to take these lessons with her so she can play tricks on Annabelle while doing the lessons. Then, Elizabeth's parents tell her she has to move to England too! Read the book to find out what happens next. I recommend this book to anyone who likes funny pranks and problem solving.
